Expert Advice

Take your swing with a quality-crafted girls’ slow pitch softball bat.

Slow pitch softball bats are separated into two general categories—aluminum and graphite/titanium lined. Aluminum bats are known for their lightweight feel, which promotes speed and control at the plate. Some manufacturers line the thin walls of an aluminum bat with a graphite/titanium composite to increase the bat’s swing speed and the size of its sweet spot.

Always consider the bat’s barrel size, taper and grip when choosing your softball bat. The barrel size is simply the length of the barrel and its diameter. Generally, the larger the barrel, the larger the sweet spot. Smaller bats, however, promote faster swing speed.

The bat taper is the diameter of your bat’s handle. A standard bat is tapered at 31/32 of an inch. If you prefer to rotate your wrist while swinging, choose a bat with a narrower diameter.

Your bat’s grip is simply the handle covering. The grip is composed of leather, rubber or a synthetic material. Look for a tacky texture that allows you to get a firm grip on the bat.
