Archery: Compound Bow Types

No matter whether you’re interested in target shooting, bow hunting or bow fishing, the bow is an important piece of archery gear. The Compound Bow is among the most popular. Commonly used for hunting, it operates using a pulley system that maximizes arrow speed. Moreover the use of various archery accessories can make this bow particularly accurate. When researching Compound bows, the primary differences are based on the different types of cam systems:

Single Cams
Also known as a Solocam or One Cam, the single cam system offers good accuracy and firm stop at full draw. Featuring a round idler wheel on the top of the bow and an elliptically shaped power-cam on the bottom, single cam systems are generally quieter and easier to maintain than other others. Single cam bows are one of today’s most popular choices in archery equipment .

Soft Cams
Cam systems vary based on the geometry of the individual cams used and Soft cams are shaped to enable easier aiming and smoother pullback. While delivering less power, this type of bow is archery gear more appropriate for a less experienced hunter.

Aggressive Cams
Aggressive cams are shaped to store greater energy, but require more effort when drawing the bow. However the result is greater arrow speed and power which are preferred when hunting game.

Traditional or Recurve bows as they are most commonly referred to are another choice in bows for hunting. These are well suited for close range hunting or target practice. Bear Archery is just one of many choices in recurve bow brands.
