In men’s lacrosse, a short stick is used by both attack and midfield players and is easier to control than a long stick. Long sticks are primarily used by defenders—these sticks are better suited for poke checks and keeping offensive players farther away.
Women’s lacrosse sticks typically require a higher pocket—sticks crafted specifically for female players are recommended.
Most modern lacrosse shafts, sometimes referred to as “handles,” are made of a hollow metal material, including aluminum, alloys or carbon fiber composites. Handles are usually come with some texture for better grip—the end of your shaft must be covered with a rubber cap or tape.
The head of your lacrosse stick is designed to catch, scoop and cradle the ball during play. Keep in mind your position: Attack pockets are strung differently than defense, while goalie heads feature a unique construction.
Mesh is the most commonly used material in lacrosse stick helmets. A stiffer pocket is more accurate while shooting or passing, but provides less control while moving.
