Perfect Poses on the Right Yoga Mat

Keep comfortable in the lotus position — your yoga mat is an essential tool for your time in the studio.

Find a yoga mat that delivers the right amount of cushioning and padding as you perfect your poses. Having your own yoga mat is important for consistency in your training, balance and hygiene in the studio.

Select from a variety of hues, materials and sizes for the yoga mat that is just right for you. Choose from standard thickness to extra-thick mats that provide ample cushioning between your body and the floor.

Turn to popular brands like Gaiam®, Manduka®, Natural Fitness® and many others.

Buying Tips

Never overlook the importance of your yoga mat. Make the most of your time in the studio with the right size, padding and material.

Consider the thickness of your mat. A mat that is too thick can make you unstable as you attempt the sirsasana, but a mat that's too thin can leave you uncomfortable post-workout. Shop extra thick mats that are 6mm and above or thin mats that are up to 2mm.

The stickiness of your mat provides grip and traction. Select from sticky or non-sticky surfaces or mats designed with a non-slip texture. Look to non-slip yoga socks to give you extra traction as you're mastering poses on the mat.

Many yogis desire a mat that is environmentally friendly: Look for yoga mats designed from recycled materials. Many mats are composed of materials that are natural and biodegradable for sustainability.

Expert Advice

Thick about the different materials used to design yoga mats. Select from mats composed of natural rubbers or jute as well as foam, PVC and microfibers.

Transporting your mat to and from the studio is a breeze with yoga mats that come with simple straps that allow you to roll and store your mat, or pack it up in your yoga bag.
