Buying Tips

Drivers:

Built to produce the most distance, your driver is the longest club and lowest loft in your bag.

Modern driver heads are made of titanium and contain a variety of materials in their make-up. Drivers are available in a many lofts, typically between 8 and 15 degrees for men and 10 and 15 degrees for women. The loft is the angle of the clubhead—the lower the loft, the lower the ball flight. New golfers who desire more flight should opt for loft

Fairway Woods:

Fairway woods have a higher loft than drivers. These clubs feature a smaller profile design that can be used from the tee for added directional control, or from the fairway for more distance than hybrids or long irons.

A fairway wood’s design and high loft enables it to get the ball airborne from fairway lies. These clubs provide distance and trajectory transition from the driver to the hybrid or long irons. They are almost always designed with graphite shafts.

Irons:

Most golfers use irons sets for shots of less than 200 yards. Traditional iron sets are comprised of eight irons—the three through nine irons and a pitching wedge. Irons can be made of a variety of materials and technical features. Select from game improvement and players irons.

Hybrids

Hybrids are designed as the transition club between fairway woods and irons. They feature characteristics that make them easier to hit than a traditional long iron, including a lower profile, wider sole and lower center of gravity.

Hybrids can be a part of a complete set or stand alone, replacing your harder-to-hit irons. Club lengths vary between manufacturers.

Putters:

Many modern putters are designed with three to four degrees of loft for a smooth roll and limited skidding. This simple club comes in blade, mallet and alignment clubhead designs and a variety of grip sizes and lengths.

Expert Advice

Your club's center of gravity is the point in the clubhead at which all of the points of balance intersect. The lower the center of gravity, the higher the ball flight and easier it is to hit. A higher center of gravity lowers ball flight.
