Buying Tips

Think about the different golf clubs in your bag when making your purchase.

Golf drivers are the distance-maker in your game. This club is the longest in your bag, with the lowest loft. Loft describes the angle—the lower the loft, the lower the ball flight. New golfers who need more height should opt for a higher lofted driver.

Fairway woods offer performance from the tee to the fairway. These clubs have a smaller clubhead profile that can be used for directional control from the tee or distance from the fairway.

Golf ironsare used for shots of less than 200 yards. Game improvement irons often offer more forgiveness on mishits. Hybrids are the transition club in your bag—moving you between your woods and irons.

Today’s putters are designed with three to four degrees of loft, which produces a smooth roll and limited skidding. Select from putters in blade, mallet or alignment putters.

Expert Advice

Not all clubs are created equally. Keep in mind these factors when selecting your complete golf set.

Shaft flex is the amount of flexible bend in the shaft of your club. Beginners should look for a club with added flex, while more experienced players may look for a stiffer club. Stiffer flex benefits golfers with a faster swing speed.

Clubheads come in three basic sizes for all clubs: standard, midsize and oversized. Oversized heads offer a larger sweet spot than a standard club, but is often harder to control.

Select between steel and graphite clubs. Graphite is lightweight with more flex—a boon for beginner golfers with a slower swing speed. Steel is heavier with less flex, but is much more durable than graphite.
