Baseball Batting Helmets

In order to prevent head injuries when batting or running bases, baseball batting helmets must be carefully selected, keeping fit and helmet design in mind. Developing an understanding of baseball helmets and how they should be chosen is crucial in the helmet buying process.

Types of Baseball Helmets

Intended to protect players while at bat, helmets vary primarily based on the level of protection offered. After various adaptations of the original helmet introduced in the late 1950s, the primary types of baseball batting helmets include:

• Dual Earflap Batting Helmet – Based on the original batting helmet, dual earflap batting helmets feature a design that includes a hard plastic shell with extended protection covering the ear and temple area. Though most often used as youth baseball helmets, Dual Earflap helmets are still used in baseball at all levels including high school, university and professional. The MVP and Prospect are two examples of Mizuno baseball helmets with dual earflaps.
• Combo Helmets – Typically offering increased protection, combination batting helmets often include a facemask or other extension to prevent injury or re-injury. Commonly used as youth baseball helmets, these are often used by players at all levels to offer greater protection for areas that have been previously injured. Adidas and Rip-IT combo helmets are just a few brands that feature this added facemask protection.

Sizing Baseball Batting Helmets

Proper sizing is crucial to getting the greatest amount of protection from any batting helmet.

1. Measure Your Head – Using a loose tape measure, determine the circumference of your head just above your ears.
2. Consult a Helmet Sizing Chart – Baseball batting helmets have a set of standard sizes which will work across most brands.
3. Try On the Helmet – Once you’ve identified a properly sized helmet, try it on. Fasten the chin strap and ensure that the helmet is snug, comfortable and does not overly obscure your vision.
4. Simulate Activity – Reproduce movements that commonly occur during play. This is particularly important when selecting youth baseball helmets. If the helmet shifts during activity to expose sensitive areas or obscure vision, attempt to adjust the helmet’s chin strap.

Batting Helmet Buying Considerations

When shopping for a baseball batting helmet, consider helmet features to find the best choice for you:

• Weight – A well-constructed batting helmet does not have to be overly restrictive. Look for a lighter-weight helmet that offers protection without restraint.
• Ventilation – Comfort is an important component in batting helmets and ventilation is a big ingredient. Look for head protection that allows proper air circulation to keep the player safe and comfortable.
• Sizing – The majority of baseball batting helmets are one-size-fits-all (OSFA), however with increased attention on injury prevention a greater number of players are opting for custom-fit helmets. One alternative is Easton’s Stealth Grip, an adjustable, dial-fit system which allows quick adjustment to maximize protection.
• Available Customizations – Each player will have their own set of specific needs. Although most players are well protected by OSFA helmets, some may need customizations like facemasks, face protectors and heartier chin straps. Look for helmets that can accommodate the customizations without alteration.
• Safety Certifications – Keep in mind baseball batting helmets should meet standards set by The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).
• Appearance – Most baseball helmets have sticker modification kits to create that distinct look for each baseball player.
