Expert Advice

Consider goalkeeper gloves with all-weather fabrication if you often play outside in wet, muddy conditions. The all-weather gloves are made to perform in rainy games much better than regular gloves. Fleece gloves will give you an extra layer of warmth when playing in cold conditions. If you play indoor soccer, lightweight mesh gloves offer breathability to the hand.

Goalkeeper gloves with finger protection are built with a rigid backbone-like structure that stops your fingers from being pushed back too far and can protect you against finger injuries.

Every goalkeeper should have at least one pair of practice gloves. The material used in high-end gloves is specially designed to allow a strong grip on the ball, and the more game time you put on them, the less effective that material will be. You are much better off getting additional pairs of less expensive gloves for the day-to-day grind of practice, and saving your game gloves for game day.

Gloves that are too small can seriously hamper your game. Finding the right size is essential for your game.

Most goalkeepers prefer to wear gloves that are a little larger than they actually need, giving them a larger surface area to stop the ball. Glove sizes correspond roughly to your shoe size, but come in whole sizes only. If you are between sizes, buy the larger size.

Measure your palm size. Use a tape measure all the way around the widest part of your palm, excluding your thumb. Measure both hands and add one inch to the largest measurement. For example, if your longest measurement is seven inches, your glove size is eight.
