Learn More About Fly Fishing Rods
Fly fishing rods from DICKíS Sporting Goods offer the strength, balance and sensitivity you need on the water.
Many love fly fishing for its simplicityósimply cast your line into the water and wait for a bite. Fly fishing rods build momentum in fly fishing line and control their momentum and distance in the water. These long, lithe fishing rods are ultra-lightweight and easy to handle.
When purchasing a fly fishing rod, you should consider the type of water environment, weather conditions, and the fly and fish rod you will be using.
Fly fishing rods are measured in ounces. If youíre after small panfish, you should use a lighter weight rod, while larger fish demand the fighting power of a more substantial size rod. Keep in mind, fly fishing rods are lighter than conventional rods and are typically made of materials like bamboo or graphite.
Fly fishing rods are also longer than conventional rods. Shorter rods of 6 to 8 feet are great for small creeks and pounds, while rods longer than 8 feet work well in larger bodies of water.
Guides are the metal loops that secure the fly line up and out of the rod, and they are typically made of stainless steel, nickel or titanium. There are three types of guides:
- Tip-Top Guides are located on the very end of the rod.
- Running Guides are located in the middle of the rod.
- Stripping Guides are the first or second on the rod.
The flex of your rod refers to how much it will bend during casting your fly, while a rodís action describes a rodís casting distance and accuracy.
You should think about your water environment and casting stroke as when choosing the action and flex thatís right for you. For example, faster action rods with less flex are better suited for anglers who cast fast, power strokes.
