Buying a paddle for kayaking or canoeing is often an overlooked task for most beginners. Although they suit a similar purpose, kayak paddles differ from canoe paddles in some ways:
• Kayak Paddles - There are four basic types of kayak paddles which can all vary based on the type of kayaking you anticipate doing; beginners should look at paddle length, the paddle’s shaft, the paddle blade and finally paddle construction. As with any piece of water sports equipment, selecting the right paddle will involve a set of tradeoffs that involve features and cost, as well as personal preference.
• Canoe Paddles – Canoe paddles involve fewer variables, selecting the right paddle for canoeing will involve assessing paddle length, construction and shape. When considering length, select a paddle length that will extend from the tip of our nose to beneath the water line by the length of the blade.
