Season Essentials: Youth Baseball & Softball Cleat Buying Guide

Watch your little one round the bases in youth baseball cleats from DICK’S Sporting Goods.

From practice to play, youth baseball cleats are a key element to their performance on the field. Kids’ baseball and softball cleats should provide excellent support, comfort and traction so young players can focus on learning the fundamentals of the game.

The latest youth baseball cleats are equipped with the same performance features as the adult versions—so your youngster can look and feel like the pros. Select from a variety of styles and sizes for boys and girls, and shop popular brands like Nike®, Under Armour®, Mizuno® and adidas®.

Buying Tips

Keep in mind these factors when selecting softball and baseball cleats for your child:

  • Molded cleats are popular for kids. These all-purpose cleats handle a variety of field conditions well. They come affixed to the bottom of the shoe. Many are made of the hard plastic material TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, which provides excellent grip and durability. Always consult league requirements before selecting their cleats—metal studs are illegal in many youth leagues.
  • Nubuck leather and synthetic materials are common on youth cleats, and they provide excellent durability. For breathability, you may want to try cleats with perforations or mesh paneling. These features help keep them comfortable during hot days on the field.
  • What’s on the inside of their cleat counts. Inner sockliners help manage perspiration while responsive midsole padding keeps them comfortable as they make their way to third. Some cleats come with high-tech molded foam for maximum shock absorption and rebound.
  • An abrasion-resistant toe provides durability for foot drag.

Expert Advice

Make sure your child has adequate ankle support on the diamond. Some cleats come with extended ankle collars. These high-top cleats promote stability on the field but are heavier than their low-top counterparts. Players who prefer a lighter shoe often opt for low-top cleats.

Fit is also important for youth baseball and softball players. Do not buy large cleats for your child to grow into over time—this may lead to injury and discomfort on the field. Cleats should, however, allow for some flexibility of movement. Keep in mind that they will be wearing thick baseball socks during the game and practice.
