Expert Advice

Looking for the right jacket this winter? Use these guidelines to find the outerwear that’s right for you:

  1. You should always consider your season and activity when selecting your jacket, but if you need a little extra versatility, try a three-in-one system jacket. This brand of outerwear can be customized based on the weather of the day. Or try layering a lightweight fleece jacket beneath a soft shell jacket.
  2. Keep in mind that garments are typically designated as waterproof or water-resistant. Water-resistant garments allow some permeability. These garments are breathable and comfortable for a variety of activities. Waterproof garments, however, completely block water penetration for superior protection, limiting breathability. Some fabrics are actually designed to repel moisture on contact.
  3. Inner liners promote comfort and warmth when you need it most. Look for fleece, microfleece or soft brushed fabric—particularly if you’ll be spending long hours outdoors.
  4. Working out in the cold? Try a vest or running jacket, which allow for easy mobility.
  5. For extreme conditions, choose an insulated jackets. Jackets typically come with temperature designations or guidelines. The level of warmth provided is measured in a “fill rating.” The higher the fill rating the more warmth a garment provides.
  6. Though natural down insulation has superior warmth-to-weight ratio, synthetic insulation is much more water-resistant.
