Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outperforms its pricepoint by a longshot I bought this so a friend could fish with me while on vacation. Because I had my own gear along already, I was looking for something inexpensive that was sufficient for him to use. I picked a 7' MH and was very impressed with the weight, strength and action while in the store. I decided to use this combo myself and to let him fish with my higher-priced gear. What a treat! This rod casts wonderfully, it feels light even after hours of fishing, the dense cork on the handle feels great. I cheated and used it in saltwater, which is not what it's made for. I gave it a freshwater shower and lube right after, but now the reel's chassis screws have a little visible rust. The reel still works perfectly and looks clean inside, but I'll only use it in freshwater from now on (as the manufacturer intended.) The rod still looks new even after time in the salt and months of subsequent use. It is a really great rod. I'm used to fishing graphite rods and am competent enough to not break them, so I expect I'll be enjoying this for years to come. If I didn't know the price, I'd guess this to be a ~$35 reel and an ~$80 rod. At this price, it is a fantastic bargain.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WORST ROD EVER I was fishing with this combo for the second time and i got it snagged in a tree. When I gave it a quick pull, the rod snapped in two. bad quality.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Typical Shakespeare Ive just broken my third one only get it because it is cheap. Reel is poor quality too. I know a lot of you will take this review for granted because of other reviews. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT SPOOL MAX LINE TEST. Reel can handle it but rod will snap in half.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this little rod I've had this rod for the last six years. I've always used it for spinners or wacky worms. It currently broke and while doing a search trying to find a replacement I was surprised reading these reviews so I thought I put up one of my own.I'm an avid fisherman and have many expensive St. Croix and Ducket rods yet I always seem to go back to this little guy for light tackle

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great rod for the price Bought this combo cause I needed a 3rd rod for some body that was fishing with me one day. Ended up putting a $150 reel on this rod cause I liked the action of the rod. 2 months later I havent taken the reel off cause I broke a way more expensive rod and this Shakespeare has taken the same abuse and performed flawlessly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Rod & Reel Combo I purchesd this rod & reel combo a few months ago and I have been very satisfied with it. The reel is very well made. It's reels in nice and smooth. I've caught large and smallmouths using this combo set, from 1 lbs to 6 lbs bass and it has done great! You will not be disappointed buying this combo, in fact, I'm looking to purchase another in a few weeks for a fishing trip to Lake Erie, PA.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY First cast, and the rod completely broke in half. Horrible experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for a low priced pole I bought this for a friend for his birthday and so far, so good. I have taken him multiple times, haves used multiple baits (live, crank, jerk and jigs). The reel is the weakest link and even that has been flawless, he has no problem with our group or on his own. He has a MH lined with 12# test and for a guy who will fish about 25 times per year in places you drive to and not places you fly to this has proven to be a grrat deal. If you are looking for a St. Croix, keep looking but if a nice rod, smooth retrieve and cast, sensative enough to feel and hook good fish and strong enough to land your large forest preserve fish, you will be happy with this combo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this rod The rod is a perfect blend of sensitivity and casting power.I ended up putting a different reel on it, so I can't comment on the reel, seems like its good quality, I just had a 35 size reel I wanted to use
