Rated 5 out of 5áby Fishing Magician Good, sturdy reel
Penn Fierce is a good, sturdy, all metal reel. I need tough equipment that can take some use and abuse while kayak fishing. This seemed to fit the bill for a decent price. I paired it up with an Ugly Stik Intercoastal rod and it seems like a good setup for my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Tim Awesome Reel. Good price too.
It's a little heavier than some others, but it's strong and casts far. Smooth action, anti-reverse. Loop on seems to be minimal. Multi ball bearings. For most light fishing the 3000 will work, but the 4000 is a bit beefier and goes well on a 6-7ft pole. Plan on landing lots of drum and specks.

Rated 4 out of 5áby Snook-Daddy Good value for money
I bought this reel to use for salt water, inshore fishing in Florida. Good ergonomics, nice smooth drag system, with fine-increment adjustments. Good mid-priced reel for the regular fisherman. Also bought a Penn Battle, which is the next step up with a heavier bail, couple more bearings, and a better drag system....and may hold up better for fishing guides, avid anglers who are using it a lot, etc.

Bought this for surfcasting for striped bass. Have used it 6 or 8 times so far it works great. No problems casting and retrieving. Have 30 lb braid on it with a mono backing.
Caught quite a few fish with no problems. The drag is very smooth. Time will tell if the reel holds up to salt and sand abuse. I did buy the No Sweat protection plan just incase.

Rated 5 out of 5áby VTTri Penns are great, the Fierce is no exception
I love Penn reels. Yeah, they're a tiny bit more expensive for the number of bearings you get, they sometimes aren't as smooth, can be heavy, but that's not everything. They're tough. Really tough. I have a two battles, a sargus, a spinfisher and recently picked up a fierce for a second rod. It's a 5000 size, I put 50lb braid on it for surf fishing and matched it to an extra heavy tsunami airwave for chunking. This is a second rod/reel, loaner, back-up combo, so I just wanted something reliable and cheap.
I got both in this combo, and really I think the fierce is the perfect surf/salt reel for someone on a budget or who doesn't fish THAT much (in fact, my good buddies wife asked me what she should get him for a new reel, and I immediately suggested the fierce). It's got all the features of the up level reels, but it's cheaper. It's sort of what I would call the bare-minimum for someone serious about salt water fishing. I.e. not just a vacation fisherman, but someone who is going to spend 20+ weekends on the water. Sure, it's not going to last 3 years if you are a diehard swimming out to rocks and fishing 4 days a week march-december, but then, it's 1/10th the price of the reels I see some guys using.
I would never buy a Sargus again, even though I love it, because the Fierce is nearly 95-97% as good and cheaper. Yeah, the battle is nicer, and the spinfisher much lighter, but the Fierce is a reel that will stand up to abuse, and if you break it, no biggee, it's not hundreds of dollars. The only reel I might buy over this is the W&M Sabalos, but it's $30 more, and likely not worth it for many fisherman.
I'm actually returning a okuma reel I bought this week and getting another fierce instead. The price difference is $20 and the perfomance difference is at least 2 fold, there is no comparison, the Penn is of MUCH higher quality.

Rated 2 out of 5áby Dingo Sounds Rough
I use this reel on my second surf fishing rod and it does cast well. The reel is maintained after each use but does sound rough when reeling in.
My other surf reel is a Shimano Saragosa which is as smooth as the day I bought it.
Maybe my rating of the Penn is like comparing a Yugo to a BMW. In future I will stick with Shimano.

Very good reel. Sturdy and smooth. Don't bother spending hundreds on a reel. This is perfect for beginners to pros. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
