I was pretty skeptical of getting this, I walked into DSG wanting to purchase the Yakima blocks but someone had literally grabbed them infront of me and walked away. So i said why not.. 80 bucks! As others reviewed, I swapped the straps with ratchets to strap down the two racks and I use the given yellow straps to tie down my kayak. I love it! At around 50 mph, no movement and I can say that I sometimes forget that its on top of my roof. I've driven with this in very rugged terrain also and it holds up better than I expected with none of the straps loosening and everything motionless. :) I would definitely recommend this product to others. Its a cheaper alternative to actual roof racks and the best part is that i can use it on ANY vehicle.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jfd1980 Great Value Better Design
The price for this carrier is great especially when the choices are so limited for a carrier designed for regular cars is so limited. The design, however is flawed. I now have a dented roof. With a few more supports this problem could be eliminated by moving the load bearing to the edges where the roof support is greater. I have since purchaced additional padding that I am hopping will prevent future damage. The carrier itself is very sturdy and the Kayak very secure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by New to white water kayaking Great roof rack for the price.
I bought this rack to transport a white water kayak on a Ford Edge without a factory roof rack. After using it 2 or 3 times now, I find it very easy to attach to the car and that it holds my kayak very securely. I have not used the bow and stearn straps and it seems to work great. The only negative to this rack as well as any others this style is the straps through the inside of the car which tends to be directly above my head and I need to somewhat adjust my seat position to avoid hitting my head against it.

I carry my Kayak on top of my Caviler, these support the kayak and protect the roof
of my car. I feel secure that the load will not shift or the pads shift around.
Why didn't I think of this?

I have a double cab ram and purchased these for the canoe I also purchased to free up bed space.. However They do not come close to stretching the width of the roof top (I realize the ram is a pretty wide truck as a lot of trucks are these days.. However I was skeptical of getting these in the first place and have confirmed i'm better off without.. 80$ price tag is pretty steep for 4 foam blocks and 2 bars of aluminum an some straps..
However the overall product on the right vehicle I think would do just fine.
The roof of my truck dents in because there is no support where these sit on the roof so be sure to check your roof and placement before putting anything heavy on it. Returned the item.
I wouldn't recommend this product because yakima ( I think ) had the same roof system but without the bar so you can set the width at any length across the roof and not only as far as the bar allows you on this product. Plus also available was a rear hitch mount extender that would hold whatever....which in turn could be used for anything hauling wood or larger items which seems a bit more practical.

Very easy to use and does what its intended for. Could be better straps but they do work. Perfect for our rackless car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by kayak solves the problem
I already had some ratchet straps so after reading other reveiws I decided to use them to secure the racks to the roof. That is the only change I made. I made three trips over the next 3 days to different lakes in the area traveling at speeds up to 65mph. This product worked great. The kayak never moved. The roof rack never slid. When the system was removed from the car there were no marks or damage of any kind. I would suggest using a tip from another review I read--twist the straps a few times on the secure lines that go to the front and back bumpers-- it really does reduce the strap vibration dramatically. Also you should trim the straps after installation to prevent them from blowing all over the place and make the following hook ups easier.l For those with a small car wondering if it would work for them--I drive a Toyota Corolla. I am glad I bought this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Chris Works! Quick to set up and take down.
We've used this product to haul two kayaks. Only local trips so far, but the carrier has worked well.

I use this rack system to strap my 13 foot kayak to my car. overall this is a nice substitute to a more expensive roof rack. It's easy enough to install and uninstall. all the pieces fit inside the cockpit of my kayak so storage is easy. The "Chromate buckles" have a tendancy to loosen at speeds higher than 50mph. They will work fine at lower speeds and shorter distances, and while they can work at higher speeds, I wouldn't say they are reliable at higher speeds. I will probably purchase some ratchet straps for a more secure fit.
