Great "Cargo Kayak"
We are a family of three who like to explore local rivers and occasionally kayak short trips to islands along the coast.We like to spend the day on some of those islands and have found problems carrying all of the necessities my wife decides to carry in three kayaks.I bought the Guide 119 as a "Pak-Yak" or my "cargo kayak". I love this canoe. I can carry the cooler, the umbrella, the beach chairs, the first aid stuff, and some beach toys for the 11 year old boy. With a double bladed paddle I can usually stay ahead of them in 10-foot kayaks.I am 54 years old and have not been in a canoe in many years. I find the 119 to be very stable and comfortable.I made a "T" from PVC pipe to use as a footrest so my butt would stay planted in the seat, but other than that, It is a perfect little boat. It is more wind sensitive than a kayak due to more boat above the water. I paddle harder into the wind, but I sail better than their kayaks with the wind. Great little canoe! I can even carry the beagle when she wants to go!

better than a kayak for allaround
I have owned my 119 for a couple of years now and I truly love it, my friends who bought the "sportsman" style Kayaks in camo colors for hunting and fishing cannot fish or hunt the waters I can with their side depth. I have great side depth, get a double sided paddle you will love it ! I only wish they had camoed the inside, I got some paint designed for plastic and did the job myself.I put foam pipe insulation on the wall support boards to make them quiet. Wait until it's on sell, I got mine for less than 400 at Dicks.

Good for solo river camping
I am a novice solo canoeist and looked long and hard before choosing this over a Kayak.
Wanted a canoe to carry gear for island camping trips
With this model I am able to carry my solo tent, bag, lantern, pistol, small cooler and Coleman stove. I use it on rivers and creeks that have some rapids and swift waters.
It is a bit slow in calm water,than it's slimmer sisters. The double blade paddle is the only way the go with this model.
If you use the single paddle, you have to move around to much for my taste.
I did lower the seat about 4 inches and moved it just a little forward
I have found it tacks reasonably well but it will tip slightly faster than other longer Old Towns. I would not recommend this for a fishing canoe. It is true if you move around in her without being careful, you could go in the water. Nor would be good for duck hunting for the same reasons.
But for the price it is a great boat for the sportsman, I can just throw it in my pick up and do a camping trip on short notice without anyone's help. As for tipping , the trade off to that is I can carry my gear with ease. I just try to be careful
Overall I love it.

solo ecomony
I bought this boat to float the West Virginia rivers, from the slow muddy western streams to the swift rocky eastern streams. I have used an Old Town 158, but getting to old to carry it around (over 80 lbs.). Also used Old Town Loon kayaks, but have trouble getting in and out. This 119 is a perfect compromise. Just the right length and a dream to thread between the rocks or around the downed trees. If this boat won't get me there, nothing will. Been paddling for almost thirty years and I'm happy to find a boat that fits my size (220 lbs, 5'10"#, my fitness level #the boat weighs about 45 lbs.# and my wallet #paid about $350 at Dick's#. I did have to lower the back of the seat one inch to keep from sliding out. I added foot pegs to give me the ability to maneuver like the kayak. I also use a double bladed paddle #the boat waddles a bit with a single blade#. I can throw it on the jeep and be on the water in no time. Hope to see you out there. My best buy ever
I have tandom canoe and also kayaks.I love fishing rivers ponds and lakes. Ibought my Old Town guide 119 last spring,and used it all spring and summer. It works just great for me,and I am 60 years old. What a great boat for the price. Some people complain about the seat, but with a seat pad in it I think it's fine and the upright back fits my back fine. I use a kayak paddle and it handles very well. I couldn't be more pleased with it.

Works well for me
Purchased this canoe to duck hunt out of back in November and hunted out of it approximately 15-20 times this season. The length and weight are perfect for my duck hunting needs. It's a little tippy and you have to be careful when leaning or reaching behind you, but that's to be expected in a canoe of this size. It's pretty much what I expected based on my height (6') and weight (200). I actually sit in the canoe while hunting and cover myself and gear with some 3D camo material and it's almost like having a layout boat. I don't hunt with a dog, so room is not an issue, but with the manuverability and speed of this boat I can retrieve ducks very quickly. Getting in and out of the boat in deeper water (3-5ft) while wading can be a challenge if you ever have to do that, but it's not impossible. Overall I am happy with this purchase compared to the $700-$1000 I would have spent on a comparable layout, pirogue or sneak boat.

Loving the boat, not the seat
Boat itself is awesome. I purchased this craft because my 75 lb pooch won?t be left behind. So, I went into this purchase knowing I was going to modify it to fit the dog. I moved the front thwart back 1ft and the back thwart + seat back 6 inches. Lowered the back of the chair 1 ½ ish. I had to cut and finish new thwarts for this, but that?s a chunk of the fun. Now the dog fits perfect with comfort space and I don?t feel like he would get stuck when he tips me. And he will. With dog + 2ltrs water + Dry clothes/coat/shoes/towels the weight is only slightly biased to the back and varies noticeably depending on how the dog positions himself, as expected.
I?m attaching a couple pictures and having a small laugh at my wife. She took a ton of pictures and didn?t get the whole boat in any of them. Lol You can see the original holes for the front thwart. One of them is misleading for the fit of the dog as his butt is back under the thwart, but I was relieved to have him lay down for the first time ever. If nothing else, this is the only boat to encourage him to plop-it.
If you are looking for a good strait tracker, this isn?t it. This guy will more than excel for what I purchased it for. Lazy to half spirited floats on moving rivers. I expect it to maneuver around tight, flowing bends and maintain an easier paddle for the stretches with slow to no water flow. It?s perfect for that where I used to work at it. I can dodge anything and really move along when I want. The drunken-strait line just adds to the character. That?s what we?re after right, character? I do use a double blade paddle.
I ride ever so slightly deeper than the two 12? recreational kayaks in the fleet, meaning it will drag bottom about the same. One is a sit on and the other sit in. This was tested without the dog while factory to make it fair and the dude in the kayak was slightly bigger than me.
When tested in factory condition my first impression was that it ?Feels? more tippy than any other boat I?ve tried while somehow still stable. But I knew there was no way I would ever tip it ?while solo. Enter dog and the trip becomes ?interesting?. I took him out this late January fully expecting to drink some cold Lake Springfield (Think the Simpsons and add a few chems). Almost did a few times, and came extremely close twice. Having soloed a very large n? heavy 3 seater (WaterQuest Mackinaw, for the price go Old Town) for a couple years since my wife went to kayak, I?m used to his habits and I?m sure that?s what saved me. For those of you paddling with your best friend, I noticed that he is much calmer when he faces me. Probably because his butt can?t move as far, doesn?t see all the birds, and isn?t trying to run after the fishermens? casts.
Now to the not so perfect Star Rating. With all the negatives about the seat over several years, where is Old Town??? Everything negative anybody ever said about the seat, ?yep. I lowered it about 1 ½ inches on the back and am still falling out. This makes it very difficult to find a comfy spot for your legs/feet. The only option is to sit indian with a cut to size blue sleeping pad for knees and ankles. This is good for a few minutes before your legs need to uncoil, then you find yourself constantly shifting around. The backrest does provide decent back support but you can forget leaning back for anything more than 30 seconds or so before you find yourself shifting your butt again. While the back is fatigued, I do like the comfort of the bottom mold and don?t see my butt getting sore. The seat will require heavy modding and/or replacement. I?ll likely Band-Aid with foot pegs.
Old Town, where are you? Do you not see the same negative repeated endlessly? It?s to the point that reviewers just mention that they agree and move on to what seat they replaced it with or the hours they spent trying to change it. Some people don?t even bother trying it out before replacing having read reviews. If this boat was my baby I'd be reading ALL the reviews and taking notes, Old Town!

Love my 119
Bought at Dick,s in Ala.tried to buy in Macon but they wouldn,t hold it for me to get there from Savannah. Ala held it 3days and gave me a discount.I have 3 canoes 2 coleman 15ft. 1grumman 17ft .I grab my Guide 119 over any of the others,easy for me to handle by myself "Getting a little older" I,ve been paddling since I was 17 yes at first it nearly dumped me,but is easy to get used to and In my opinion it tracks very well with my kayak paddle is easy to get in and out of I have stood up in it also.I can carry plenty of gear and I think it floats in as little water as my kayak.As i read other reviews it seems to be reall tippy for the smaller paddlers as I,m 5'11 and weigh 225 it does very well for me. Over all I can,t say anything bad I love it!!!!!!

Guide 119
Bought this canoe in July instead of a kayak.What a mistake!!This thing is so unstable and tracks terrible.You always feel like your going to tip over.This tippy canoe needs training wheels or floats.The seat provided makes your buns numb.If you want to go for a swim spend your hard earned money on this thing.Anyone want to buy a canoe??

love it
I wanted something to duck hunt out of. I sunk my sisters kayak twice tring to get out( funny stories now) and didnt have much room for many decoys. This is great. I set and pick up my decoys from my knees a little harder to get to with my heavy waders on. I hauled 18 duck decoys in front and 4 geese in the back. Im' 5'8" 187# yea it a little hard to get turned around in to get geese out of back while in it but can be done cautiously. Bought a 1" pad for seat when butt gets tired and added a strap to keep seat where I want it up or down. have other little mods in mind. So far working out great if only duck would cooperate a little bit better.
