Rated 5 out of 5 by Oddiodog Great purchase I'm really liking Bob XL. Here's whyI think it beats the heck out of a heavy bag. Targeting. Power hits without hand pain. Additional CFS Training. Targeting: I found I was hitting low on the bag. Didn?t really realize it until I used Bob. It?s tiring to hold your hands up, thus natural to lower the punches with the bag. Bob trains your muscles more appropriately. Since he adjusts from short to tall heights, I can change my aim to where I want. Specific targeting on Bob that I can't do on a bag - chin, temple, behind the ear using specific punches like hooks, uppercuts and overhand combinations. Guessing on a bag. Ribs kicks and solar plexus strikes. Even Muay Tia neck clinch while kneeing. Power hits. After working on a bag using power hits, my hands and wrist joint hurt for days afterwards. Not so with Bob. 80% of my punches go to Bobs head which moves and absorbs the strike and has no ill effect on the joints. If I pull my punches on the bag, I don't get the practice of following a punch through. Additional CFS Training: Many combat fighting stem techniques can be practiced on Bob. Quick double palms under the chin, palm strike to the nose, or smashes to the neck or collar bone. Eye gouging. Choke holds. Put him on the floor for ground and pound. Twisting his head from a bear hug, or quick finish all out whaling on him. And as an extra benefit, I can stretch legs by putting one on his shoulder. Great for me because he can be lowered to reach. Seriously great piece of equipment. As for wearing heavy bag gloves - hotting the head isn't necessary. MMA gloves will do just fine. But punching the body full force could potentially do some damage. Imo, for body strikes, you're better off wrapping your hands and wearing heavy bag gloves for that. Filling the bas is the only downside. I have water in mine. It was easy, available and will be easy to dump out when needed. But I am at risk of it springing a leak and doing water damage. A lot of water goes in there. Less than my old waterbed though and that was in the house. Other down side to the water is that Bob moves around a little with the sway of the water when I'm working on him and I have to reposition, since he's in a corner area. Guys who fill it with sand report it requires 4-5 60 lb bags. And the sand apparently is quite a task to fill in time and effort. If I could change anything, it would be great to have removable you could put on him to practice arm holds, bars, wrist grabs, undercooks etc. Less expensive would be great too. But I imagine it would eventually sell easily on CL if it's still in good condition. Hope that helps. March 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Max's mom Excellent product I bought this for myself for exercise and my son who has cerbral palsy to work on his range of motion. We both love it! It is heavy enough on its own that it doesn't move on a carpeted floor. Very happy with the product and the fast, free delivery. September 16, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Bud GREAT PRODUCT AND DELIVERY The Century BOB XL is a "GREAT" Training Tool. Easy to unpack and set up and both the base and upper body was shipped together in two different boxes. The delivery time from order to front door was only 3 days and we can't be more happy with this product as a excellent training tool. Decided to take the advice from earlier reviews and put some clothes on BOB XL to aid his longevity, but can be suprising when walking around the corner and see him standing in front of you... Rated 5 out of 5 by R Great opponent bag Extremely happy with the BOB XL. Heavy enough that it doesn't move around too much. A little pricey June 18, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by JJ and family Great product. Durable! This is great for use as a punching bag, weapons training, and even for grappling or wrestling moves (when off the base)! Heavy duty and life size! I do recommend putting some type of covering on it (clothes), I think it will make it last longer. It is so life like, I still jump when I am not thinking about it and see it behind me! December 25, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by KungFuAndy Awesome My two daughters and I love beating this guy up! We are studying 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and they are only 6 and 8, so they can't really hold the practice pads while I give it my all on kicks and punches. This is also so much better than a traditional bag to me, because you know exactly where your kicks and punches land. Uppercut to the chin, kick to the head, punch to the abdomen, etc. Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I have sand in mine, and usually use it in my garage which has a carpeted floor. I purchased a cheap handtruck to move him around easily. If we want to train in the driveway, I roll him out. If we want to train in the back yard, I roll him out, etc. My daughters renamed him though. His new name is Darthon Deathicon. Which aparently is a villainous character on a newer Scooby Doo. Rated 4 out of 5 by P-middy Bob can take a beating I've had Bob assembled and weighted for a couple days now and he provides a good alternative to a punching bag. The foam/rubber he's made of is solid and can take a beating, and his head has more give than the torso (as you'd expect), but is pretty solid too. One thing I really like about using Bob over a regular bag is that it helps me appreciate more how it would actually be to hit someone. I realize now that I've been punching more right to left on my cross than straight on. I've never realized that with a bag.VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READI dinged the product one star because I had a similar experience to the other reviewer. It appears that your order placed at Dick's is fulfilled by the manufacturer (Century) and there is some disconnect between their systems. My Bob also came without the base and I had to call Century to get one shipped. I even checked the MSRP (with base) at Century and it was the same as on Dicks, so I believe Dick's is supposed to be selling it with the base but the order goes through as just the torso. Dick's needs to fix this and I've contacted customer service about it. That all said, Century was pretty great about sending me the base at no charge. Just a bit of a hassle. January 1, 2012
