Marcy Pro Compact Trainer 4.7 5 25 25
A Fine Choice for a Home Gym! I've tried all sorts of home gyms over the years; the last one was a Bio Force Pro. It was similar to a Bowflex , but much better. I decided that I wanted to get back into the feel of free weights , but with safety built in (no spotter needed). I did a quick run through this afternoon with bench presses , squats , and lat pull-downs. I was very impressed! It's smooth and quiet. I bought the leg developer as well , and it performs as advertised. I use it strictly for leg curls. For the money , you can't beat the versatility of this machine. The only drawback that I had was this; it looked a lot smaller in the store. Whew! It takes up a good part of my bedroom! May 3, 2013
Great Home Workout Addition if you can get over the Quality Satisfied with the exercises you can do at home with this unit. Not extremely happy with the quality of the product. The Push-Down Bar that is utilized for the Curl Bar also is already bent after only having this for a few months. The plastic sleeves that are put over the actual weight holding bars are not all the same outside diameter which makes it extremely difficult to put the Olympic Weights on the sleeves. Two of them were oversized on the inside edges and I basically have to force the weights on the sleeves to fit them snug where they are supposed to fit. Also, the bench press bar is not centered in the middle of the actual machine. It lined up actually off to one side compared to where the bench is centered at. If you can get over things like this, it is a good home machine. April 14, 2013
very pleased I spent a lot of time researching about this machine and others. I'm an experienced weight lifter, for about 17 years. I have a powertec powercage at home and wanted something to supplement that. After going back and forth, I went with this Marcy unit and am so far very pleased. I think if you are serious about lifting, this machine can do the job but it's best if you have a powercage also so you can get the best of both worlds. Having said that, this is an awesome little machine. Others have said they question the quality and the welds, but, I haven't found that to be the case. It took me about 2.5 hours to put all of it together (including the leg extension unit# by myself. The instructions are incredibly easy and the packaging was top notch. I'm very impressed with the way the designers thought all this up. The machine is pretty good quality and honestly, for $500 #the price of unit, leg extension, and tax# I am very satisfied. That is a good deal and hard to beat. The machine is not that big. It is very compact and can fit into a small room. The exercise variety is good enough for me considering that I tend to use the powercage also for dead lifts, squats, etc, so I get a complete workout. You can easily change from a push type excercise #chest press, shoulder press# to a pull exercise #lat pulls, tricep extension) simply by moving the your weight plates to different lever arm. No need to make actual adjustments on the machine. Very clever. Another important reason that I decided on this unit so that my wife can safely exercise with light weights and feel safe doing so. The machine is very smooth. Some said you hear squeeks. I don't, none whatsoever, but I did use a lubricating compound on the joints when putting it all together. Final verdict: For the price, quality, size, i give this machine five stars. There really is nothing out there to compete with it when you consider all those three factors. February 13, 2013
I love it. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but i love it. The machine is easy to use and quick to change the exercises. Its great if you don't have a spotter like me, and have a fear of getting stuck under the weights haha. I have recommended this to several of my friends. Easy to assemble. January 17, 2013
Good Quality, Worth the Money for Safety This machine works very well for people like me that lift alone. You can get a good heavy workout on the bench press and other exercises without a spotter or fear of being pinned due to injury. I have gone up to 400lbs on the bench with this machine with no issues or malfunctions. The machine works very smoothly and is a nice compliment to your free weight training. While I would not recommend using a machine as your sole weight training exercise routine due to the stress it puts on your shoulders it is well worth the money for the piece of mind to know you aren't going to get pinned if you blow out a muscle. One thing I would recommend if you purchase this machine and plan on using it on a concrete floor ie a basement I would highly recommend buying a pad or area carpet to place it on so that it does not slide while doing squats or standing rows. The machine's natural range of motion is not entirely straight up and down and will cause you to pull the machine backwards at times if not secured to the floor. If you are using less weight this isn't as big of a problem. January 11, 2013
Economical Leverage Machine - Average Quality Purchased for $400 on sale at Dicks. This is a lower quality leverage machine and is not on the scale of a Powertec or BodySolid. Before you buy... try out the Powertec and BodySolid you will see a difference in quality. This machine has low quality welding and thinner steel thickness compared to the other 2 brands. The bushings for the axles and pivot rods are lower quality and cause squeaking and require the use of grease, I don't think using the recommended WD-40 will last too long, so during assembly make sure you have some type of grease for the axles and axle bolts. The steel frame does appear to have some visible defects. Instructions are bad, they show you a photo of the completed step not a step by step direction, this is not to hard to figure out but can be confusing at times. So with all the negatives here are the positives, it is cheap and compact, after greasing it has smooth movements, finish is glossy black and easy to clean. If you use light to moderate weights then you will probably be satisfied but if you like to occasionally use heavy weights you would be better off with another brand. Expect to need to use heavier weights on this machine than comparable free weights, I use approx 80 lbs more on this than on bench press, 60 lbs heavier on this than military presses. January 2, 2013
Great Addition to Home Workout Room Tired of going to stinky health clubs with surly underpaid attendants and lots of germs on the ancient equipment and dirty locker rooms to make you sick? This is the cure! A great little machine to keep you in shape at home on your own time and schedule with your own TV and Sound. Add some walking aerobics and a few sit ups and some dumbbells and you have all you need with this machine to stay in great shape. I have been lifting for 40 years and scooped this up at Dick's immediately. This is a great price and the machine will do it all in a small area for an intermediate weight lifter who likes to stay in shape in the comfort of your own home. This is not for heavy lifting. High reps and med weight for the average guy to look and feel better every day is the reward with this machine. Dick's help was really good about making sure all of the parts were there. This may work for you if you have a spare room to set up right and enjoy good health. December 28, 2012
Marcy Pro Compact Trainer I bought the Marcy Pro Compact Trainer hoping to get some upper body work out. The machine is fantastic! It took me about an hour to put it together and it has exceeded my expectations! My only recommendation is to grease the joints during assembly to prevent squeaks! December 7, 2012
Excellent Machine One of the best machines I ever use , easy to set up, comfortable, saves you time happy to have it. the price is worth it. June 23, 2012
Very Good - Excellent Value I felt compelled to write a review since I bought this machine based on what was written here (thanks to all for sharing). Assembly took about 2 hours and was reasonably straight forward (Pictures, no, text in the assembly manual). Got my first workout in today. I would consider myself an experienced procrastinator :). I am very familiar with all types of gym equipment. At 47 I'm not as comfortable without a spotter and I have much less time to workout than I used to so this system is going to work great for me. Read on to see a few details to consider. Two small drawbacks I found: First: I am 6'2" and wanted to let people of the same size know, the lat pull down function may not be a "full pull". I found that if I swung the bench out of the way (GREAT FEATURE BTW) and use a folding chair, I get a better stretch at the top. I was thinking of cutting a section of the "Stop" thereby raising the bar higher and allwowing tall users to use the built in bench. We'll see if I have the patience or the guts to complete the geometry necessary to make it happen. Second: It was thoughtful to put weight storage on the machine however, the storage arms are located in such a way that they intefere with the bench in multiple ways when large plates are loaded on them (swing, tilt and other exercise configurations). Overall, I got a great workout in and was able to lift with confidence. Keep in mind that it's a lever so whatever you have for plates; get a few more. I love that you can swing the bench out and still use the leg accessory. It also frees up room for other excercises if you have a smaller place (think; bosu ball or cardio, etc.) By the way, you will want some joint grease for the pivot points as they are "squeaky" out of the box. I think once I get a routine down I will become more efficient at changing plates from top to bottom. That said, you will have to remove weight to go from the lat/pull - tri/pushdown configuration to the chest/press - Squat configuration. The bench is stable and the number of excercises you get for the cost makes it an excellent value! I can't speak to the durability of the machine yet because I just got it but it feels solid and seems like it will last (I am a little worried about the bench seat and back as they seem on the flimsy side and material is questionable). I am considering going back today to get the preature curl assembly. I would suggest a few additional but simple modifications: 1. Add a "Quick Link" on the squat/bar assembly for use with tricep rope or other similar accessories. 2. As mentioned; shorten the "stop" in order to allow more travel of the swing arm (for taller users). 3. Add Rollers to the swinging bench. I have it on carpet so it moves easily but it would likely scratch a wood floor and may not move very well on rubber matting. Overall a beautifully simplistic and reasonbly compact piece of equipment that delivers as advertised at an excellent price. June 13, 2012
