Thule Evolution 1600 Cargo Carrier 3 5 9 9
Good option. We are satisfied. We bought this about 3 years ago. We have had the chance to use it every summer. It has held up well and does a solid job of keeping everything safe and secure in route and it has been easy to access on our trips. It is not too difficult for me to install and put away on my own but it is easier to do with a second set of hands just because of the awkward(large) shape/size. I have no big complaints. There is some wind noise & it could be a bit thicker in design but it doesnt seem to be impacted by wind. For the price I think it is about the best option out there. May 14, 2013
useless car roof carrier With the carrier attached and Empty, I test drove on a local road...seemed fine. After packing and starting my 2000 mile journey, and within a mile I noticed the front edge moving (saw thus by looking through the closed sun roof). The key lock wasn't hooked on the front lock. The key would not hook the front lock. I used a strap to secure the moving front edge. The strap made loud noises while traveling so I changed it four times in the first 20 miles of this trip. The noise was deafening. I finally stopped and bought a roll of DUCT tape and wrapped the car roof carrier around the front flopping part. That worked. Wasted time, wasted money, and am very unhappy with this product. April 24, 2013
Fair We bought this, and the same day drove from Maryland to Georgia with it on top of our van. Some combination of the storage box and the factory cross bars caused the box to bounce the entire way. We lost two bolts holding the cross bars on to the van during the way (thank God for Ace Hardware where I was able to get replacement bolts), so I ended up having to stop every hour to tighten everything up. When we got to GA, I removed the carrier and noticed that the bouncing had caused the cargo box to crack by the hardware mounts. Nothing too serious, but cracked none the less. Thanks to a couple of foam pool noodles wedged under the cross bars to prevent bouncing, the return trip was uneventful. March 26, 2013
Just works - no fuss, no muss. A great product. I was concerned about crosswinds pushing my small van around (Mazda 5) with this on the top - especially through the winding mountain roads on my trip - but it didn't happen. It swallowed a surprising amount of gear. It also kept everything perfectly dry in a torrential downpour we drove through. Only nit, if I have to pick a nit, is a whistling sound from the front edge at speeds over 55mph. Our roof rack itself provides some whistle, but this was different, but not to the point of being too much of a nuisance (survived 18hrs on the road with it). First installation takes a bit of a learning curve too, but we got it on and it was really secure for our ~1100mile trip. September 10, 2012
Love it great price. Took it camping. Holds a lot of stuff. Don't know if it's water proof yet. August 22, 2012
Great all purpose traveler Found the price to be very reasonable as compared to others. Bought it and immediately took it on a weeklong 1500 mile round trip. Was a little difficult to attach to the top of our Tahoe as the lid only opens in one direction so the far side attachments were hard to reach. If it weren't for my very long arms it would have been tough. Holds a lot of stuff, but I found that I couldn't put very much along the edge where the lid closes, because things would shift when I closed the lid and then block the locking mechanism. None of this was bad, just not quite perfect. Other than that, what is to say? It's quality made, so far as I can tell. It holds a lot and it looks nice. Went through rain several times and it was always dry. July 23, 2012
Dick's Has Some Real Problems I was looking so forward to buying a Thule box. The first one was delivered damaged. They did have that one picked up and shipped a second one quickly. Guess what, the second one was damaged in the exact same way! I notified Dicks immediately, approx. March 5, and Dicks said they would have it picked up and send another one. One reason for the purchase was for a family ski trip the middle of March, so that got all botched up! So, here I am in the middle of April still with the 2nd box in my living room! I finally called them and told them to come get the stupid thing out of my living room and that I would find somewhere else to buy one! I am really disappointed Dicks didn't offer a really sweet deal to me on another box for the inconvenience! I had been a somewhat loyal customer :(!! April 10, 2012
carrier , OK Dick's Sport's is MOT Used for extra stoage on road trips, seems sturdy and well built. However this is an older discontinued product. I called customer service and told them that I did NOT want one with the U-bolt type mounts, they checked with the warehouse and said it had the new easy clamp mounts, GUESS WHAT, it has the old style U-bolt mounts. I would reccomend THULE but not Dick's sporting googs ! March 24, 2012
I am dissapointed with this product Dick's Sporting Goods let me down on this one. The internet is riddled with features of the Thule Evolution 1600. More specifically, this cargo box is supposed to open on either side for easy access to the mounting hardware. What Dick's sent me only opens on one side. Dick's website also indicates that this box includes "quick release mounting hardware". In actuality, that is not the case. I am dissapointed with this purchase. November 29, 2011
