by EJ44 Decent product but beware its vintage
When I mistakenly left the key, (unlocked) in my original Thule 1600 a few weeks ago the entire top half of the box let go on the freeway. I kicked myself for making such a dumb mistake and was equally bummed that I would no longer be able to buy one like it since Thule no longer makes this model in both this size and the two tone color, (silver top, black bottom) which I prefer. I was shocked to find one on the Dicks website at a fantastic price and free shipping since Thule hasn't made one in many years. After briefly reading the product description and its listing of Thule's "quick release attachment" it looked completely identical to the one that I has lost on the freeway days before. Once it arrived my heart sank when I saw that this was not the case. The color, size, and quality are identical to my old 1600 which is great. The attachment system is definitely NOT. My original 1600 used Thule's U-bolt system with sliding tracks inside the box. You could simply plop it on your roof, slide the track until there was a mounting hole on either side of the bar and then pop the U bolt up thru the holes and snap it secure with their internal locking mechanism. It was quick, easy, and a one person job. This system had multiple parts and pieces that you have to stack together and hold in place while attempting to use their provided T nuts to secure it to the bar. Not only does it look like a junk show on the car in my opinion, but it takes two people to try to perform the whole process. Its the farthest thing from "quick release" in my opinion. Instead of taking it back I decided that it would actually be an easy fix to make it more user friendly and I'm a bit of a tinkerer anyway. I scrapped the entire attachment system. I simply went to the hardware and bought some U bolts, about 3" wide and 4" long, and wing nuts, washers to fit the threads so I wouldn't need tools to tighten them. The box already has multiple holes in the bottom of the tub but none of these matched the 3" span of my U bolts so I simply marked and drilled new ones. It was very easy to do as the roof box material is not that thick and its only plastic anyway. To ensure a snug fit inside the box, I went to a local plastics store and had them cut me four, 1"x1"x1" strips of white HDPE, (the same thing you see cutting boards for cooking made out of). I drilled thru them to correspond with the span of the U bolts. Now I can just pop the U bolt up thru the box, place the HDPE strips down onto the bolts inside the box and place a washer and wing nut down to tighten. You could easily use something like a piece of 1x3 wood instead of the HDPE but I chose to use something that wouldn't be affected by moisture. Visually its way cleaner looking from the outside now (just like my original 1600 did). Additionally, the HDPE pieces also cover up all the unused mounting holes so no water will make it into box. All you see is the U bolt going up into the box and not an ugly, complicated stack of parts that are a nightmare to hold together while you install them. I also discovered that the box only opens up on one side instead of both sides, which my old 1600 was able to do. For me not a big deal. All I can figure is that Dicks must have sourced these as overstock from Thule as they must be close to 10 years old. They pre date my original 1600, (that had the updated U bolt attachment system) and that one was at least that old. They are however a sweet box and built with the same materials as all the new Thule and Yakima boxes at way less cost so don't let the age scare you. I just wish Dicks would have been a bit more forthcoming in their ad about how old these boxes really are. Overall no harm no foul I suppose. I'm happy with my box and will NEVER make the same mistake leaving my key in the lock again :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Samson Love my Thule !
Does a great job with storing cargo as it was designed to do. The aerodynamic design saves on gas. Out Boxer dog with expanded room in the back of our SUV gives it two thumbs (paws) up !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Quizzy5 Worked great
We bought this to go on top of our 2013 Buick Enclave. It fits perfect. There was no problem attaching it to the roof rack. There are more bolts and screws than the pricier model which just has the clamps but it wasn't hard to attach. We had a six hour road trip to the beach. It held a guitar, guitar stand, beach toys and a couple of duffle bags . I would highly recommend! The staff at Dick's helped me load it into the car too..they were great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by target242 Excellent value at price point
I purchased this somewhat spur of the moment after looking at several other roof top cargo carriers. This is ideally designed more for sports equipment, skis, etc. although we purchased it mainly for luggage. I liked that I was able to buy it in-store. It assembled pretty easily and I am by no means Mr. Mechanical or Mr. Outdoors. It is fairly lightweight and very aerodynamic. It is almost unnoticeable atop our Ford Excursion. I would purchase this product again.

We bought this for a road trip to California and within a few days it was already cracking. Also this is a pain to install and takes like 20 mins and you need two people to do it. We returned it as soon as we got back to buy a Yakima skybox instead. Seriously, spend a little more and buy a higher quality skybox. This product is a major disappointment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by APIndy Good option. We are satisfied.
We bought this about 3 years ago. We have had the chance to use it every summer. It has held up well and does a solid job of keeping everything safe and secure in route and it has been easy to access on our trips. It is not too difficult for me to install and put away on my own but it is easier to do with a second set of hands just because of the awkward(large) shape/size. I have no big complaints. There is some wind noise & it could be a bit thicker in design but it doesnt seem to be impacted by wind. For the price I think it is about the best option out there.

Rated 1 out of 5 by traveler useless car roof carrier
With the carrier attached and Empty, I test drove on a local road...seemed fine.
After packing and starting my 2000 mile journey, and within a mile I noticed
the front edge moving (saw thus by looking through the closed sun roof). The key lock wasn't hooked on the front lock. The key would not hook the front lock. I used a strap to secure the moving front edge. The strap made loud noises while traveling so I changed it four times in the first 20 miles of this trip. The noise was deafening. I finally stopped and bought a roll of DUCT tape and wrapped the car roof carrier around the front flopping part. That worked. Wasted time, wasted money, and am very unhappy with this product.

We bought this, and the same day drove from Maryland to Georgia with it on top of our van. Some combination of the storage box and the factory cross bars caused the box to bounce the entire way. We lost two bolts holding the cross bars on to the van during the way (thank God for Ace Hardware where I was able to get replacement bolts), so I ended up having to stop every hour to tighten everything up. When we got to GA, I removed the carrier and noticed that the bouncing had caused the cargo box to crack by the hardware mounts. Nothing too serious, but cracked none the less. Thanks to a couple of foam pool noodles wedged under the cross bars to prevent bouncing, the return trip was uneventful.

A great product. I was concerned about crosswinds pushing my small van around (Mazda 5) with this on the top - especially through the winding mountain roads on my trip - but it didn't happen. It swallowed a surprising amount of gear. It also kept everything perfectly dry in a torrential downpour we drove through. Only nit, if I have to pick a nit, is a whistling sound from the front edge at speeds over 55mph. Our roof rack itself provides some whistle, but this was different, but not to the point of being too much of a nuisance (survived 18hrs on the road with it). First installation takes a bit of a learning curve too, but we got it on and it was really secure for our ~1100mile trip.

Took it camping. Holds a lot of stuff. Don't know if it's water proof yet.
