Shakespeare Alpha Bigwater Spinning Reels 9 9
Good Reel for Fish no larger than 32" but that is enuff for Me. OK I have heard talk about the Alpha series and it is made cheap. Ok the series is reasonable but I have caught and landed a 32" Cobia with this reel. I fish off the coast of Pensacola, Florida and the bays inshore. I never get past the Ship wreck Massachusettes and fish the outside sand bar breaks along the coast. I have to keep good lub on this reel but it has worked great for me. Not a muscle reel but can do the chore with drag set right and fish played right. O' I have used the reel 3 yrs. and it still fishes fine. January 22, 2015
Cheap as chips I bought two of these reels many moons ago when I was in Florida (UK Angler) from a local Wallmart store for a few quid each and after owning them for a few years I can honestly say that they are great for every day use. I have read some reviews from people using them for beach reels and complaining about them, hardly surprising considering that they are half the size of what a decent fixed spool reel should be for surf casting. I use them solely for sea fishing whether it's for spinning or float fishing and have found that the salt water has no affect on them at all (unless our UK sea has less salt in it!) Pound for pound you cannot beat this reel for value for money. September 19, 2014
NOT BAD. HAD TO DO A LITTLE WORK ON IT I BOUGHT THIS REEL AS A COMBO WITH THE 9' ALPHA ROD #ON SALE FOR $39.99 PLUS A 20% OFF COUPON# FOR A FISHING TRIP THAT NIGHT. SET IT UP FOR BIG CATS WITH A 2 OZ WEIGHT AND BEAD, BARREL SWIVEL, 25 LB MONO AFTER THE SWIVEL , #7 CIRCLE HOOK AND A BIG CUT PIECE OF BLUEGILL. AFTER ABOUT 40 MINS, HOOKED INTO A 12-13 LB33 BLUE. HE TRIED TO GET UNDER A ROCK OR LOCK OR SOMETHING AND I WAS ABLE TO MUSCLE HIM OUT AND LAND HIM WITHOUT TOO MUCH PROBLEM. HOWEVWER, THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT THE REEL MADE SOME NOISE NASTY NOISE AT TIMES. I TOOK IT ALL APART THE NEXT DAY AND CLEANED THE CHEAP-A** GREASE OUT OF IT AND DOSED IT WITH GRAPHITE. WHEN I TOOK THE SPOOL OFF, THAT THING WAS DRYYYYY. NOT ONE BIT OF ANY TYPE OF LUBRICATION FOR THE DRAG. AFTER DOSING THAT UP WITH GRAPHITE, I HOOKED SOME WEIGHT UP TO IT AND CAST IN THE YARD AND IT WORKED FLAWLESSLY WITH NO MORE NASTY EXTRA NOISES. I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS A 5 BUT I BELIEVE SHAKESPEARE SETS THIS UP TO FAIL BY NOT SUFFICIENTLY LUBRICATING THE REEL DURING ASSEMBLY. August 6, 2014
Get what you pay for Just bought the 12' combo rod and reel #70#..It was $49.99.! It's GREAT.Came with line also.If I wanted top of the line $600+ would be in order. March 20, 2014
good for money Works as supposed to, good for the price, not a saltwater reel, will seize up February 12, 2014
You get what you pay for. I suppose this reel would be decent for a fesh water reel, but it was recomended for a surf reel for a trip to the beach. It worked the first day and locked up. This was even with me rinsing it off in the shower for about 5 minutes. The drag seems to go from nothing to it's full setting and the 20lb line that came on it is junk. If you want a big reel that can handle saltwater look somewhere else, this ain't it. I gave it one star only because it wouldn't let me submit a review with 0. June 18, 2013
Better than that I have had an Alpha bigwater for 3 years for obx surf fishing. It has served me well. I am actually getting another to replace an optix reel that busted on me. My alpha is still working fine, including pulling on a big shark and monster drum. No tangles or slipping observed. Its no penn but its not supposed to be. Great value reel in my experience. This reel *IS* trash I agree with a previous reviewer - you get what you pay for. I bought it as a combo with a Shakespeare Alpha Bigwater 9'0 pole. The pole is sturdy, but when I hooked up with "something" huge (I was never able to land "it") at the Kure Beach, NC pier - the reel slipped terribly. The handle is not balanced at all, and the grip feels cheap, and was not comfortable at all during the 30 minute fight. That battle was lost at the reel. Do not buy this reel. November 12, 2012
DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!! I use this reel with a 12ft surf rod to reach catfish in tailwaters of dams. After 2 months of constant use retrieving heavy weightwith large weights with catfish approaching the 20lb range the gears are stripped. The drag is incredibly not smooth. If you bought it already return it asap; if you are thinking about buying it, STOP! I am greatful that I have not hooked up with any trophy catfish yet because this reel would get destroyed.
