Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best GPS Rangefinder Available I don't write many reviews, and that's probably because if something works really well, I feel it should. Or if it fails my expectations, it doesn't surprise me anymore. That said, The Garmin Approach G6 is simply one of those products that so greatly exceeds my expectations, I have to write a review on it. For several years I've primarily used a laser rangefinder, though for convenience sake I keep trying every new GPS that comes along?hoping I'll find the Holy Grail of yardages in an easy-to-use GPS product. In the past decade I've tried every model of SkyCaddie ever manufactured, including the latest SGXw. I've tried the Golf Buddy Platinum, a Bushnell, GPS watches, but nothing holds a candle to the Garmin G6?nothing! All the others found their way to [@] at a great loss of money! One of the inherent features of the G6 is its simplicity. The obvious front, middle and back yardages are always present, but if you desire a distance from you to a water hazard, or sand trap, etc., the touchscreen is so responsive and easy to use I still can't believe it. If you want layup distances, you can drag the cursor to the distance you want, or simply look at the screen and see they are also automatically displayed at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yard arcs from the center of the green. At any time, you can press one of two buttons (more simplicity) on the G6 and see an expanded view of the green, or press it again and go back to the hole view. That might seem like a minor point, but so many of the other devices make this action more difficult. My last point about the Garmin G6 is the most important?to me, anyway. It is SO VISIBLE?even in bright sunlight. In fact, because of how the screen is made, it's even more visible in the sunlight. I had mine set for the backlight to go off after 15 seconds, yet every time I looked at it on the course, the screen was very bright and readable. I thought there was something wrong with it and the backlight was staying on, but in fact, the backlight was actually going off as it should, but having it on simply made no difference. The display was as easy to read with the backlight on or off. On a cloudy or overcast day, the backlight does come into play and makes a marked difference. If you're on the fence about a GPS unit, please do yourself a favor and give the Garmin G6 a try. If you don't like it you can always return it, but I'm betting that will not happen. And don't forget, it has over 27,000 courses pre-loaded and there are no fees at all. You can also update the courses easily online with it hooked up to your computer (Mac or Windows). One more thing: a couple of reviews I've read said the Garmin G6 was slow acquiring courses before you started play. I have not found that to be true at all. In all cases my unit acquires the satellite in less than a minute or two.About me: retired, five rounds per week, 7-handicap, 66 years old. July 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Garmin is a good product, but needs better software interface The Garmin G6 is a very good product for distance measurement on and around the course. However, the software they use needs improvement; 1.) The battery life is hard to find (have to use Power on button). Why not display this all the time? 2.) Scoring feature is very cumbersome (too many click/buttons). My previous product (Golf GURU) was excellent in this regards. After completing a hole there should be an option to auto advance to the next hole or input scoring details from the hole just played. After the score in entered, then auto advance to the next hole. 3.) After the completion of a round the scoring details for each player should be placed in a better menu with less click to get there. 4.) I don't like how hitting the fairway is detailed. 5.) Should have the ability to turn off the other players stats. Over all this is a very good product. The size and durability are great. Garmin just needs to invests in usability, like their Auto product line. October 1, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Garmin G6 This product has all the features I need. The problem is the 2 main Features the yardage, and the pin placement do not work as they should. Example: When trying to move the "Flag" on the Green (with your finger)you can not position the flag, sometimes it moves, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it moves to far, it is very difficult to Position. Sometimes the yardage comes up wrong when showing the Green, this requires going back to the Fairway view then back to the green mode, sometimes several Times. Both the problems slow play and can become very irritating, especialy when Considering the $300.00 price tag!! November 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Garmin G6--Great Addition I have now used my Garmin G6 for 6 rounds and I can certainly say that I love it! It is just as accurate as my Skycaddie and the graphics are great and it is no heavier than a cellphone! I like that I can track my club distances and can review those at any time and that it keeps score and tracks statistics for me. I also like that it is ready to use out of the box and do not have to pay a fee to use it! For the negatives, I wish the screen and graphics were a little larger. The numbers are easy to see on the green view, but, hard to see otherwise, especially in full sun. I also don't like that there isn't any way to download the statistics and track them either offline or online. The Skycaddie at least does that much. All in all, it is a great addition to any golfers arsenal! May 22, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Battery indicator Just to let everyone know, there is a battery indicator. Once you have it on, press the on button just a little and a main screen will show. It shows you the screen brightness, satellite bars and your battery indicator. April 12, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Better technology I received this Garmin as a gift and have used it for 6 months and really enjoy the ease of use and this unit. it has many features you will learn to appreciate when you use them on a course. The points I like the most are how you can plan a hole after an errant tee shot for layup shots by touching the screen, plus the scoring and tracking driving r or left, puts and then look at where I can improve my game. I used an old sky caddie and I enjoy no user fees and downloading a course at the course, no preplanning or limits on courses stored. I can easily get 36 holes on a single charge. I like it a lot. Rated 5 out of 5 by Met and exceeded expectations. Had to buy a second GPS golf thing so my wife and I wouldn't have to discuss who would use it when we did not play together. Heard about the Garmin from a brother in law - decided to buy it with no additional research - Garmin has a good reputation. It's good - has more functions than I use at this time. The course selection comes up when I'm ready to tee off, the yardage to the hole is immediate apparent, also to the hazards as well as changing the pin location to get accurate distances. Beats trying to focus through an eye piece at the flag. Good system, would recommend it highly. September 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by a golf gps that is FAST and easy to use I have used a smartphone app that did yardage and score keeping and other stats. but once at the course it took a while to load the course, and then set up the stats that i wanted to track. i looked at several GPS models of garmin and other brands. I compared the G6 to the G7-8 but realized that for $100 more i could get wifi and my text messages on the device. (which i figured ment BATTERY Drain) so i also thought why do i need all that extra stuff on the device, for the sport that i like to play to get away from all that outside influence. basically this G6 loads instantly and knows what course your at. i would say about 10 seconds max and your ready to play and track your shots. the screen is easy to see in the sun and in the overcast days. i have played about 6 hrs of gold and the device was still good on the charge. Shot measuring is easy and fast as well. this came with a belt clip but this is a pretty good protector if you just keep it in the golf cart cup holder like i do. the screen responds pretty good, not like the newest smart phone but it works with a gold gloved finger which is nice. plain and simple this is the GPS that is basic and yet has all the important info about the whole. Also you can preview any course that is on the device. which i think is kind of neat if you bored. I love it enjoy PS with the G6 it will give you club average but wont recommend clubs to use. so if you are a tournament player (honestly) you can still use this device in tourny's as the 7 & 8 give you club suggestions you are not supposed to use those in a tourny. just FYI April 29, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product This is my second year using the G6 and it is a great tool. It is excellent in changing holes automatically and I love the scorecard feature. It is very accurate and excellent showing greens. Love the front, middle, and back feature on the greens. The fact that it has 25,000 courses loaded is another great feature. If you are looking for a great product, this is it. November 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by good value I bought the Garmin G6 for both the GPS yardage and it's ability to track the individual yardages of each club I use on the course. It's one thing to bang balls on the range; hitting the shots on the course is not the same but far more important as to the exact yardage each club produces. February 25, 2014
