OLD TOWN CANOE 146 XT
GREAT CANOE FOR THE PRICE, MY WIFE & I ARE NEW TO THE CANOE SCENE AND WE LOVED OUR FIRST OUTING IN THE OLD TOWN 146. WE PADDLED OUT ON A LAKE ABOUT 3 MILES,INSTANTLY WE LOVED THE PADDED SEATS & ADJUSTABLE PADDED SEAT BACKS.WE PRACTICED SOME TURNS, SLIDING THE CANOE & STRAIGHT POWER SRTOKING,THIS CANOE WAS SUPER EASY TO MANOUVER, IT GLIDES EFFORTLESSLY AND IS VERY STABLE, THE ROLL IS MODERATE BUT DONT WORRY,YOU'RE NOT TIPPING IT UNLESS YOU TRY TO TIP IT.IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT BUYING A CANOE,THIS ONE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN AND WILL LEAVE YOU WITH MONEY IN YOUR POCKET.GOOD LUCK & PADDLE SAFE.

Nice Canoe for the Money
I am very happy with this canoe, considering what I paid for it. It has plenty of room for two adults and a child, with space left over for a cooler and fishing tackle. With single layer poly hulls, you have to expect some flexing in the hull. Old Town did a nice job of designing the seat bases to minimize flexing while in the water, so that the canoe keeps its shape. You will notice that the hull flexes downward as you are boarding, but that really isn't a big deal. The canoe is definitely heavy, although easily managed by two people. I have also loaded it by myself many times without trouble. The key is to get underneath, resting the center seat on your shoulders and grabbing either the front seat or the gunwales. As for paddling, I was really impressed. It moves easily through the water and continues to glide after each stroke. With one adult and a small child, it is pretty stable, but a bit more tender with two adults and a child. Definitely a canoe for calm waters. As with all canoes, you have to stay centered and try not lean over the gunwales. I think most experienced paddlers would say it is a stable canoe, but if you're new to paddling, you might think it tippy at first, particularly if fully loaded. The seats are comfortable, if a bit lower than typical gunwale seats. Also, there are lots of molded in areas for water bottles, fishing rods, paddle rests, and other bit and pieces. Bottom line it is a great canoe for this price point. For us, it replaced a tandem kayak as our family boat and it is much better suited for a three person outing than the kayak. Easier to get in and out and a whole lot more room for stuff.

Fun, stable, and easy to control
I really like this canoe. The only negative is that it is fairly heavy, making it hard to drag it to the water. Once in the water though, it takes off. I have been in faster canoes that were far lighter. However, the design of this canoe makes it incredibly stable. That is important to me because I recently took a trip with my wife, who last rode in a canoe 16 years ago, and my two children, both under the age of 5. Yes, we all wore life vests. Given that I was the only person in the canoe who knew what they were doing, I had to paddle and steer the boat by myself. While this is not the fastest canoe I have been in, the wide flat bottom of the canoe made for a stable ride. The seat-backs made for a comfortable paddle. However, I wish the seatback would lay flat when not in use so that you could opt to use it as a bench and turn around while fishing. Other than that, it is the perfect canoe for my youg family. The other thing is that Old Town has a fantastic reputation. I know several people who are long term Old Town owners who rave about their canoes. The pattern seems to be that you purchase one Old Town canoe and start looking for your second or third.
