Rated 5 out of 5 by Just Me Great First Kayak I purchased this kayak as a beginner. I purposely chose it because of its size. It is smaller, which allows me to easily maneuver it in the water. Plus, it only weights 28 lbs.! I can easily carry it a distance, and heave it up on top of the car without much effort. I would highly recommend this kayak for a beginner, and especially for a woman! The only bad I can think of is not having enough time to use it. November 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by SidneyHornblower Excellent value for beginner kayak The key word to think about with this kayak is leisure. This is a small, light, easy to maneuver boat for one person who's not in a hurry. If you're paddling along, you move at a leisurely pace. This kayak was on sale when I got it, so for the money I'm giving it 5 stars. That doesn't mean it's perfect; it means the cost/value ratio is in my favor. What it's not: It is not a speed demon. I've had it up to maybe 5 mph as measured by a handheld GPSr. But it's not supposed to be fast. Remember to take it easy and accept the fact that a longer, more narrow and pointed kayak is going to out pace you. But you're on the water for leisure, not racing. It is not a great sport kayak for fishing. There are no built in rod holders or anything like that. I suppose one could fish from it, but it's not designed for fishing. It's not for long trips. The cargo capacity is very small, no built in cargo holds, just some bungee cords and a small flat spot behind your seat. The longest trip I've made in mine is a shade over 7 miles, but that was all done in an afternoon. I've not attempted even an overnight trip downriver because I have doubts I can pack everything I'd need. But again, it's for an afternoon of leisurely day trips, not a week's voyage. What I like about it: It's small and light. I can carry it with one hand, and I'm not a big or strong guy (5' 9", 160 lbs). It's fairly flat and stable in the water. The flip side of it not being fast means it's probably wider than it needs to be. It won't track as straight as longer kayaks, but you can turn it in tight places, like some of the small creek backwaters I frequent. The stability makes it feel very safe. I've not had it in anything like rough water, though. The small size means I can actually fit this thing INSIDE my Honda Civic hatchback. I have to fold the rear seats down and push the passenger seat forward to an unsittable position, but I can do it. The executive summary: good value for the money, especially if you can catch it on sale. Good kayak for beginners or anybody else who wants to spend a leisurely afternoon paddling along in calm waters. April 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by happy yappy What a blast! I've had this kayak for about 6 weeks and have only missed maybe 4 days on the lake. It tracks better than my husband's more expensive ride-on-top and my 12.5 lb dog LOVES going with me every day. After 3 low back surgeries and 2 neck surgeries I've found a way to get fit without hurting myself. With a hacksaw I shaped and placed some styrofoam in the front hull for foot stops (although you don't need them for just light paddling around) and this kayak runs around like a sports car no matter if the lake is glassy or has white caps. It's VERY stable and I can put in and out by myself. The seat gives excellent support and is quite comfortable. My husband has difficulty getting in and out because he has knee problems, so he sticks with a ride-on-top. I have no problems getting in and out. The plastic hull is durable, I beach it all of the time on gravel, and there is no serious damage. It floats in less than a foot of water with me in it!! What a fun product!! September 30, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Ohiokayaker Perfect kayak for women, teens I've had this kayak for almost a year and i love everything about it. I usually go kayaking by myself so i needed something I could lift and I can lift this baby with one arm! I'm also lucky enough to have a sedan that has a incredibly large trunk so all i have to do is fold the backseat down and this baby fits in my trunk! It's comfortable for me to kayak in for several hours, it tracks great in the water. I would not recommend the "sit in" version if you are planning on taking this into open water such as a lake and definitely not the ocean. Once the waves come up over the front the water is stuck in your boat. This kayak is perfect for a beginner or someone who needs a light boat to carry by themselves. I'm a 30yr old female about 145lbs, with back problems and i have no issues with lifting or sitting in this kayak. I have taken this boat out onto the lake (only when its calm) and it does just fine. Rated 4 out of 5 by clarina Great little boat My husband and I are looking to get into kayaking a bit more. We both have paddling experience, but not much and not recent. We bought these expecting to get better at the sport before "upgrading," but after trying them out, I'll be quite happy with these for basic day trips. We took these out this weekend on the local lake, and I was very impressed by how quickly they moved. The tracking is not terrific, but we didn't have too much trouble moving in a general direction. There was light wake from motor vehicles, and the kayak just bobbed along without any issues. The best riding, of course, was on flat water. My husband is 5'10" and I am 5'3," and we both felt comfortable. Transport is easy-- we can actually fit two into my husband's hatchback (but then no passenger) while we wait for the roof rack to arrive. I can carry my gear, snacks and kayak to the water without help, which I like. September 1, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Kasey Amazing kayak This is my first kayak and I chose it based on the price to see whether I could enjoy it. The first day I had it out, it was wonderful. It worked great and was easy to paddle. It's also very light weight and I (a five foot nothing) woman had absolutely no problem hauling it up out of the water and to my car. I would highly recommend this as a first kayak for anyone looking to get into the sport. June 21, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by NJGrandma Perfect for me! I wanted a small, simple kayak that I could use on lakes and this is ideal. I am a 5'1" , 105 lb, 66 year old woman and wanted to be able to handle a kayak by myself. This one weighs a whopping 26 lbs and is easy for me to lift and carry. I can slide it right into my Ford Escape with the front passenger seat reclined and one back seat folded down so I don't have to deal with roof racks. It's easy to get in and out of and seems quite stable in the water. There are absolutely no bells and whistles, but if, like me, you just want some peaceful and relaxing time on the water watching the birds and wildlife then this is perfect! July 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by King Nice Boat I'm 6' & right at the weight limit. The boat is to small for me both to short for comfort & weight. I had no problem with the way it moved in the water but flipped it to see how easy it was to get in & out. I could not get back into the boat without sinking it. I tried from front, side, & back. I was just to heavy to get on top without the boat filling with water. My 8 year old found it fun but a little harder to paddle then the 10' Pathfinders by Pelican. My wife on the other hand says this is her favorite one. She is 5'3" & has no problems in it. The boat is light weight & really easy to carry & load. June 21, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Jewls Great Kayak!!!! Absolutely beautiful kayak, light, easy to maneuver, comfy little padded seat. I'm 5'1" 120 lbs and have had recent surgery, I can pick this little beauty up with ease and toss it in my trunk with the back seats folded down. didnt realize it needed to be registered in Ohio, but its not expensive. Rated 4 out of 5 by sooznd Wonderful Little Kayak! I bought this as my first kayak on sale at Dick's. Potomac Kayaks are made specifically for Dick's Sporting Goods by Pelican Sports (http://www.pelicansport.com)- check out their website for more information and accessories. I needed something to fit into my small Honda Fit and this worked perfectly and got me on the water. Comes with nice water bottle holder and plenty of space under the hull to store a pack. It is comfortable and great for beginner or child. I am a 65 year old woman and can easily carry it. Does well on flat-water lakes. Have yet to try on slow moving river, but assume it would be fine. Since it is short (8 feet), it does not track as well as longer kayak- but it is great for leisurely paddling. One drawback - it does not come with foot braces. I found a pair on Amazon and we installed them, so now his little kayak has everything I need. April 27, 2014
