Rated 4 out of 5 by digitect Great canopy, great price We've owned our Quest 12'x12' straight leg canopy for a couple of months and have used it at school and club soccer games about 30 times already. It is a very sturdy frame and does not exhibit any of the bending and fragility of the smaller "instant up" canopies. It is a true 12' x 12' square at the top, absolutely huge compared to the smaller ones that claim a size based on the larger leg spread instead of the smaller canopy itself. Somebody at a game called it the "Taj Mahal" model of portable canopies, a canopy couldn't be much bigger without commercial grade construction at several times the price. The leg adjustments are adequate to keep it level on mildly uneven ground. The actions are smooth and mechanisms reasonable to press even when dirty. Some people are in the habit of lowering canopy legs at different heights to slant them into the sun to create more shade. While we have done this successfully a few times, the weight of the upper frame make this a questionable practice and certainly puts the legs and frame connection under a higher stress than it was designed to support. I wouldn't expect it to hold up in any wind like this. Someone suggested an additional hole would help leveling on less even ground and I might drill another in each leg at some point. Quest may have decided not to provide this to avoid people intentionally slanting it too much into the sun and overstressing the legs. It does fine in 5-10 mph wind with a stake in each leg, but at 15-20 mph even the additional rope ties are not enough. If you use it in light wind, I recommend buying four of the largest landscape spikes available at the home improvement store for the legs. Also buy thicker high-visibility rope for the corners because those that come with it are dark, thin, and impossible to see. They are a hazard if set up near where kids are playing! You'll need to buy four longer stakes for these corner ropes as well. Do not expect to use this in medium or high wind, it simply isn't designed for this. Occasional reports around the web stating that it is flimsy are not true. A 40 mph wind exerts a total force of nearly 600 lbs on a 12' x 12' square, at 50 mph nearly 900! It should be obvious that a canopy priced like this is not designed for extreme conditions. Even brief gusts at the beach will exceed recommended speeds. The canopy cover fabric is thin to keep it light and reasonably waterproof. If you intend to regularly use it in rain, re-coat it with commonly available waterproofing products and seam sealers although I have yet to feel a need to do this. I always fold ours up with the canopy cover on even though the instructions recommend taking it off first. Over time, the fabric and silvery inside coating may be damaged by this practice but I'm just looking to get a nine-month season's use out of this, not make it last for generations. We have the khaki color, figuring it would be better reflecting of the sun than dark blue. The hook-and-loop fasteners on the four corners are strong and the fit very good to ensure the canopy stays on the frame. Four fasteners on the four upper canopy roof ridges are also strong and well positioned. There are additional hook-and-loop fasteners along the canopy edge, two on each side. These are not perfectly positioned and sometimes hang on the frame joints if you are not careful. Two of mine recently ripped out when placing the cover on the frame without having them correctly positioned, but they are not important to the basic function and I won't bother sewing/gluing them back on. I have yet to find repair or replacement parts as of Oct.2012. It's possible some of the 10x10 parts would fit but I believe the straight leg (not instant up) model has larger components due to its weight and size. This was my biggest trepidation with the canopy and took a chance without buying Dick's extra product warranty. So far, so good! The case is relatively sturdy. But the wheels are so tiny that they barely function even rolling it through the store. They function more like drag plates across a rough parking lot and are laughable in grass. Do not believe the product information that state they make it easy for transport. Which brings me to my final issue... THIS CANOPY IS EXTREMELY HEAVY! I would estimate it is 45 pounds, but am a strong male and carry it on my shoulder like people carry lumber. But I lifted weights for years and worked construction. Most people will not be able to carry this alone. The two handles on the case are adequate, but the over-the-shoulder method with two similarly-tall people will feel more balanced for most people. That said, I don't think it is overbuilt and wouldn't want it any lighter and less sturdy. I hope this review is helpful. We have already gotten a lot of use out of our canopy and would recommend it to others who have reasonable expectations and who want a huge canopy for a reasonable price. October 8, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by action heights BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!! or How does one get REPLACEMENT PARTS??? Set up 2 of the 12x12 dome canopies for a graduation party. Loved them....until it was time to take them down and we realized that one of the legs was bent at the top near the awning and connector :( Even though this seems to be a VERY common complaint, I can't find a customer support number for replacement parts! We were offered an extended warranty at check out and regret not buying it! Bottom line: - hard to recommend this product when I know that it only lasted for one event and parts are difficult to locate - the 12x12 was roomy and provided an escape from the sun and drizzle - the wind that caused the leg to bend was so slight that we didn't notice - I don't understand why Dick's doesn't insist on redesign to address the issue of legs bending! Rated 5 out of 5 by Jen These are Great! I attend horse shows on a regular basis and we camp often. We use these tents for everything from keeping a horse out of the sun to camp chairs out of the rain. I have experience with other makes and models and this design is new and very effective. It handled wind up to 30 mph this weekend and rain can not get trapped on the edges causing the tent to sink. Very good Tent! Worth every penny. A little hard during set up to stretch and get the parts to "click" into place, but that is due to the Dome Design and necessary. I am going back to buy the warranty because it seems fair and having a 2 year no question replacement for $29.99 seems worth it.. Oh the bag to pack the unit up is much easier then the end loading bags from other companies. I suggest you buy better stakes to pound into the ground. I always do October 23, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by JW Plastic Burrs This canopy could be a nice product if it did not have sharp burrs on the plastic hinge pieces. This burrs will wear a hole in the fabric in a short time. If you buy this canopy file the burrs off of the plastic. The plastic pieces are located close to the Velcro straps that hold the fabric to the frame. We had a 12 x 12 and a 10 x 10 setup on a windy day and they held up. We did have them anchored securely. The other issue with these and probably all others that use fabric is they leak a little. I would suggest spraying with waterproofing before using. October 20, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by juder not good quality I purchased this style in April as I previously had one and it held up for seven years. I put my new one up in July and after a month, the seams started to rip and tear. I was very disappointed with this canopy as it did not withstand the weather. September 27, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Gina 12 X 12 Dome Canopy We do not want the canopy to be heavy, and we definitely want it to be easy to set up. This is both lightweight and easy to set up. But it is not strong. Our previous one got bent in a windstorm. We brought it back and exchanged it under warranty. The very first time we used the new one, it also got bent. It really seems like it ought to be possible to create one strong enough to stand up to rain and non-hurricane-force winds. I am going to say I recommend it, but perhaps only for shade on nice days -- it is not really satisfactory for camping in all weather. September 2, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by straight out of the box. the product is not leak proof out of the box Went camping and the first time it was put to use we got a hard rain and the water was running and dripping on the inside. June 25, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by fireman Poor quality Went through 2 of these, each destroyed by medium winds, although staked and roped as designed. I believe it is just too much square footage of canopy for the strength of the frame. Its the same diameter framing used on the smaller units. Fortunately I had purchase the warrenty on these units. Rated 2 out of 5 by LP Wait until the second year! We purchased this canopy last year and used it on our outdoor patio, protected by the house. We anchored it so it worked well for us. At the end of the season, the color was faded to almost white. We removed the cover and stored it inside for the winter. As we began to put the cover on again, it began ripping at random spots throughout the cover (not at the seams) We now have a useless cover with about 15 holes but a great frame! For the price, I would have expected more than one summer season with this product. April 15, 2014
