I bought this item on sale opening day and was thinking that it was a little stiff for crappie and not quit strong enough for bass. I have caught both on it and it preformed great. the big crappie are fine but you don't hardly feel the bluegill or smaller crappie. as far as bass I caught a three pounder on it, and it handled it self pretty good.

I purchased two of the 6' combo for speckeled trout fishing on the NC coast - $50.00.
They performed just as well as my fishing buddies $400 combo's, and I continually land more fish than them and they can't stand it! I LOVE this rod -the med-light action is perfect for whipping a jig head or a Mirro Lure. The sensitivity is excellent, and allows me to feel whether the fish has "hit" or just "bumped" the bait. I use this for surf fishing almost every weekend from Oct -Feb, so the reel on this combo is only good for one year before I trash it and replace it with a Penn and braided line. Every year I buy 2 more of these with Christmas gift cards.. I now own 8 of these rods -6 have the replaced Penn reel, and 2 are still the original combo I have for friends to use that aren't used to using braided line.
Buying two of the 5' combo this year for fishing from the kayak.
You will not find a better combo for $25.00...it just doesn't exist.

when you decide to purchase cheap you take a risk you either understand that you're buying local honey and you're okay with that - buy it and throw it away - philosophy, or you hope to goodness that you're getting a good deal on a product that is really worth more than the price you payed. This is one of those products that is the surprise exception to the rule; not only is a great price but it's a great piece of equipment. I used it extremely effective the very first time I used it. Easy to cast, good quality pole, excellent construction, AND great price - Ducks had it under $30. I caught several fish (and a blue crab!) and really enjoyed it. Very glad I made the purchase

Quality pole and reel for low cost. The action is smooth and you can feel the swim action thru the pole clearly.

We don't like this rod at all. The line keeps on getting stuck on the reel, Reels keeps on sticking. Not recommended.

I got this combo and my father got two other combos (they were two different shakespeare combos). We got them all the same day just before a weekend trip to the white river for some trout fishing. I got this one primarily because it had more metal and less plastic as a part of the reel. Wasn't the lightest one, but felt the most solid. At the end of the weekend, the only issues I had with this reel were user error. The other shakespeare combos had reeling issues and seemed to get a bit sticky upon reeling in. All in all they were all a pretty good success, but this one was far easier to handle and simply out performed the shakespeare combos hands down. My wife used all 3 over the weekend and said she wants the same one I have as it was the easiest for her to cast and reel. That speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and not to mention, this is meant for 4-8lb test line. Most others in this price range only go down to 6lb. That makes a pretty big difference when fishing for trout. It will also help catch fish in any clear water.
BTW, I caught about 10 trout this year, I was happy! :)
