Lifetime Elite 54" Acrylic Portable Basketball Hoop 2 5 16 16
This shouldn't be this hard This has been an absolute bear to assemble. Like other reviewers said, you construct a part and then have to pull it apart when you get to the next page of the instructions. It's just stupid. My hydraulic pump works but I've have to pull it off three times to make other things fit. This is WAY too hard. It's together now and functions alright but I had to fabricate two missing parts out of pvc and it took me two days. November 24, 2013
Lifetime Elite 90229 Basketball Hoop The assembly of this system was a NIGHTMARE to say the least. The instructions are absolutely horrible. In addition, the tools needed for assembly are hardly the standard ones anyone would maintain; i.e who keeps a 3/8" allen wrench laying around. Like many of the other reviewers I found on this website, I consider myself a reasonably competent handyman (i.e. engineer) with lots of experience repairing or building home and auto related items. However, I was at my wits end during nearly all of the assembly.this system. The worst of it is that the LAST assembly instruction involves attaching the adjusting cylinder to the system BUT the cylider is 1/2" too long AND the cylinder is locked up (doesn't contract or extend even when the release pin located at the end where the handle is attached is pressed). I went to the web to see if there was something online that could help me with my plight (i.e. was i missing something simple?) only to find reviews that perfectly match the issues that I encountered. After reading these and experiencing the same nightmare, I am surprised that Lifetime has not completed a full recall of the 90229 system, Tomorrow I plan to call Lifetime and hopefully get the email of their CEO so I can let him know his product is not ready for primetime. I am also going to go back to Dick's today and let them know that they need to protect their customers by letting their associates know of the well documented issues with this product and ideally put some heat on Lifetime to get this system off the shelves and back into the research lab from where it apparently escaped. Definitely Not Recommended (coming from a very handy guy) I am an engineer, have built homes, put countless things together, and this basket is likely the most difficult thing I have ever assembled. Unless you are extremely handy and have time, you simply will not succeed. Here are key problems on my 6 hour project: 1) at the very end you must attach the hydraulic pump...only it is about 1/2 inch too long! After spending almost 1.5 hours I gave up, and had to drill a new hole through very hard steel. VERY FRUSTRATING. 2) Instructions are PATHETIC. No words, just very small hard to understand pictures with a series of letters to describe each part. The letters are hard to read, are random. At times I spend 20 minutes on a single step trying to understand which part to use. 3) Order is suspect. In 4 instances I had to undo what I did because there was some small part I missed in the picture while putting this together. 4) Many parts barely or don't fit. On one pin I spent 30 minutes just trying to squeeze through the hole. 5# this thing is MASSIVE. Impossible to lift by oneself #I am strong and could not lift it up fromt he ground. I would have quit after two hours, but by then it would have taken me just as long to put it back in box and return it to get a different brand. I am not a competing sales guy, just a nice, honest, do it yourself dad....DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT, YOU WILL REGRET IT. October 16, 2013
hate it When I put it together it had missing parts and was relay hard to assemble. I am relay good at putting hoops together. And it looks funny and hard to raise and lower. March 23, 2013
DONT THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY!!!!!!!!! I have put Lifetime products together before, this portable system (not the other regular pole systems), comes missing parts and the handle almost doesn't work. The only other one almost as bad is the 60" portable with the huge base. After 2 systems and waiting for them to send the missing parts I'm done. I just got the other 54" portable with the regular pole works fine and it went together in like an hour and a half...what's up there? January 28, 2013
Awesome!! I really love this hoop. It took a while to put it together but once it was its great. its a little expensive but my parents paid for it so it doesn't really matter. September 15, 2012
absolutely the worst I have installed over a thousand basketball systems and this one is the worst. Portable systems are very difficult to begin with but this one is by far the worst. Lifetime obviously makes cheap horrible products but they took the cake on this one. Installing these systems are a nightmare. If you hate your kids buy this system for them... August 25, 2012
DO NOT BUY I had the same issue with the hydraulic arm not working. Also, two of the protective plastic pieces that go on the bottom of the backboard were not in the box. Also had to make the hole bigger in order for the arm to fit. Instructions are a pain, too. June 30, 2012
Horrible Purchase I am a very handy person and have put other basketball hoops together in the past and never had as many issues as i had with this one. Once i opened the unit and took all the parts out and started to assemble i realized i was missing parts. I called to get replacements and continued to assemble once they arrived a few days later. I had to put this together and take it a part a few times due to the instructions not being really clear. There arent any written instructions only pictures. Alot of the pictures arent clear with how the parts go together. The hardest part of assembling this unit was trying to get the gas strut to attach to the handle and pole. I had to use a drill to widen the hole for the bolt to secure properly to the bottom strut that attaches the board to the pole. Overall this took me over 6 hours to assemble and once completed the play is questionable at best. the board is very wobbley and shakes badly. The lift is also difficult to use when lowering the board height. June 20, 2012
Wouldn't recommend this if it were free After spending a day putting it together, the last piece to install was broken. The hydraulic compressor didn't work. I went and got a replacement and of course, that didn't work either. After two days trying to get this thing put together, I'm giving up; it's not worth my time. I'll have to spend another day taking it apart and returning it to the store. WORTHLESS. June 1, 2012
