Rated 4.4 out of 5áby 53 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5áby Chose this over many others I needed to upgrade from an old 2 bike carrier to a larger 4 bike rack, and the choices are plenty. After lots of researching, I narrowed my choices down to 3. I wanted a rack that had; anti sway cradles; easy to use tilt back feature (meaning an easy release lever vs pins); was solidly constructed; lockable to the receiver; and I wanted to be able to fold down the arms as well , (again with an easy release lever). This is handy to me for either getting in the garage or while in the parking lot of a trailhead to minimize the chance of someone running into it. At first glance I was sold on the Yakima Ridgeback 4. It seemed to check all the boxes and it's a very sharp looking rack as well. Unfortunately several reviewers on Amazon claimed that the rack broke at the 90 by the base. It appears at least some of these people had it on the back of an RV or trailer, (which apparantly Yakima now claims will void the warranty) and is not recommended. This is apparently due to extra rocking and bouncing being on a long wheel base vehicle. OK, that makes sense but still, it scares me about it's durability. Even if a trailer or RV bounces 10 times what my minivan does, does that mean there is a finite number of bounces until the rack fails? I didn't want to take the chance so ruled that one out. I also considered the Softride dura 4. It appears solidly built and I also like the idea that you can tilt it back with the bikes on, this seems very convenient to me and as far as I know is one of the few carriers that can do this. Reviewers did state though that with bikes on it, it is HEAVY to get back up in place, (probably why they came out with a hydraulic assisted one). Anyhow what finally crossed this one off my list was it isn't able to fold the arms down. Yes, you can take them off and put them in the trunk but that seems an extra hassle. Plus, what if you decide to just leave them on as you go riding, it sounds like anyone could just pull them off, (as far as I know they don't lock). So, that led me to the Thule Trailway. At first look I wasn't sure how it tilted back or the arms fold down until I saw one at Dicks. It does indeed have very easy to manipulate levers which you simply pull on, (similar to the Yakima). The Trailway I believe is also manufactured specifically for Dicks or some other big box stores as you won't find it on Thule's site. Another dealer said it was identical to the Hitching post Pro or the parkway but from what I've seen, this isn't true. Those both use a pin and clip system to tilt back or fold the arms. The quick release levers on the Trailway are awesome and super easy to use, no fussing around trying to align holes, etc. Plus, at only $199 it's a steal. That's 100 cheaper than the Yakima and Softride mentioned earlier. The only box it didn't check for me was an included lock to the receiver. Thule does sell these for around $50 I believe, (seems like a lot for what you're getting), however that still leaves this rack $50 below the competition. Finally, congrats if you've read this far, but I often read people have issues putting 4 bikes on 4 bike racks. Just for reference I have 2 24" Diamondbacks, one 20" Diamondback and one older Novara safari. I was able to install all four with out much issue. I found it easier to rotate all the cradles inward before putting on the bikes one at a time. Then roll the cradles around as you need once you get the bike in place. Oh, that's another plus for the Thule in that the cradles move, (not easily), allowing you to position them for the best fit. Again, I was able to get all four of these bikes on relatively easily without any top bar adapters. I would definitely recommend this rack, for the price I think it's very hard to beat. July 10, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5áby Solid well built product. Great bike rack- only complaint is it's a bit tight with four bikes, but doable. June 30, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5áby Great peoduct Very sturdy. We are able to get all four nikes on it. Easiest to put on "boys" bikes with straight bar but it is still possible to get the ones without the bar on it. We've just done local trips so far and have been very pleased. We are looking in to getting a lock for the hitch at our Uhaul store. June 18, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5áby Thule Trailway Great functionality and quality however Rack doesn't fit my vehicle due to the distance from my tow insert to outside of bumper. Had to purchase an extension to fit my 04 Range Rover. June 14, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5áby Not perfect, but pretty good. We purchased this rack to fill a short-term need, carrying 4 bikes to an event. I agree with the reviewer who said "Not 4 adult bikes" - one has to get creative to fit 4 bikes on, including adjusting the spacing of the bike brackets. With non-traditional frames this becomes a real challenge, but the system is flexible enough to do a lot of accommodation. Regarding the reviewer who had the unfortunate experience of the rack falling off the car - I'm sorry to say but this was likely user error. With the bolt properly tightened with the provided washer and lock washer the rack is absolutely secure; on a long trip or travelling rough roads the bolt should be checked and re-tightened as necessary every time you stop. (If the rack tongue moves at all in the hitch receiver, the bolt is not tight enough. I do appreciate the reviewer's warning, which prompted me to purchase the optional locking bolt (Thule STL2 Snug-Tite Receiver Lock STL2) which adds theft protection and makes it impossible for the bolt to vibrate completely out. I am happy with the rack; overall quality is good and it's solidly built. And knowing that in most cases I will carry only 1 or 2 bikes, I'm quite happy with it. (If I was certain we weren't carrying 4 bikes again I'd opt for the 2-bike version.) For anyone who will regularly and frequently carry 4 bikes, I suggest you keep looking and if possible try other racks before buying. If 4-bike capacity falls into the "would be nice" category rather than "must have" I recommend the Thule Trailway as a good value. May 27, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5áby Does NOT fit 4 adult bikes We purchased this bike carrier because we have been happy with Thule products in the past and were looking forward to taking our bikes out to Colorado this summer. We are SO disappointed.... We have tried numerous times putting our families 4 adult bikes onto this carrier and each and every time it turns a nice day into a completely frustrating one. We have tried alternating the bikes so the handle bars don't hit, we have tried alternating the order of how the bikes go on the carrier, we have purchased two additional support bars to try and make some of the bikes sit higher.....NOTHING WORKS!!! We then reached out to Thule directly and they told us to just do all of the above that we had already tried. Now, I will say 3 bikes go on great, its the 4th one we can't get. If the carrier were just 2 inches longer, it would be perfect. The bikes don't sway and the carrier is solid and easy to use - BUT if I can't get our bikes on easy EVERY time, then it's just not worth it. I am just thankful that we have tried this enough times before our trip cross country and know that we need to get a different carrier. May 24, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5áby Lower pin fell out and 3 expensive bicycles destroyed.. Lower pin is not secure with cheesey latch mechanism. April 20, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5áby Strong and fast to assemble We have only used it once so far, but it assembled very quickly. Bikes mount easily and securely. Planning a much longer haul but expect it to handle the trip very well. Using it on the hitch of a Chevy Sierra truck. September 27, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5áby Quality You Would Expect from Thule Honestly I have only used it once so far, and only with two bikes, but so far it's just what I expected. Very easy to install, solid construction, the bikes went on with ease. I was not too sure about the single half bolt to secure it to the car hitch, but after reading other reviews, no one had any issues. I do plan on getting the bolt with a lock on it for better security which does go through the entire width of the base. Otherwise no complaints so far. Mine was missing the sway strap when it arrived, but one call to customer service and they sent me one in two days. Took it out on the road and hit highway speeds of 65+, no problem. I like how the cradles are adjustable on the arms to accommodate bikes of different size. Nothing came close to the back of my vehicle, and the bikes were separated enough not to hit each other. The anti-sway piece's along with the sway strap kept the bikes from moving. September 21, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5áby Great purchase Very stylish and good quality bike rack. There is no need for spending money on something more expensive if you are using it for occasional travel. We use it for 4 mountain bikes, two adult and 2 youth - all with wide frame and didn't have any problems with fitting them on. September 18, 2015
