Rated 5 out of 5 by Proven name brand product, for a reasonable price Have not had the opportunity to use them, but have done months of research, and the product has proven to work each time. I am sure I will be pleased with the function of this product, Coghlans are known for their products. October 1, 2014

Rated 3 out of 5 by Average item I have not used it yet as I purchased it for an emergency kit that I am creating. It seems to be an average fire starter that I purchased at a good price. September 3, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by great tool my son has want this item for camping trips , so we bought it and camped for 3 day with bon-fires each night. August 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great little fire starter I have used this starter once while camping and it only took me a couple minutes to get a fire going (and this was my first time using a fire starter). Sparks very easily and the spark is big, so the fire can get started quicker. I use the keychain to latch to my backpack. Overall gets the job done very well. August 4, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not bad but not great What I thought was standard issue type item, but missing a little. It did not come with a striker, should have noticed and I am not to sure about the shavings, didn't see a good ingintion when I tried it. July 29, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Half the Package for Half the Price Assuming that you will always have a knife or other steel handy (Not so easy with airline travel to your destination) this is a great tool for the money. April 23, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by does not perform as advertised my son and i spent a half an hour scraping the magnesium block to try to start a fire with dry tinder. sparks did not ignite the magnesium. April 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lots of undeserved bad reviews here ... Several people saw a video on youtube called "magnesium fraud" showing a bad quality chinese mag bar vs Doan mag bar. The third one is the Coghlans. And the comment made in the video about it is "it works great except the ferro rod can fall off". The magnesium quality is comparable to the Doan. The 2 I use are fairly easy to scrape and ignite. I think Coghlans adressed the ferro rod falling off problem because on mines, the magnesium sides are squeezing the rod into the bar. I carry a separate firesteel anyway but you can always JB Weld it if you have concerns. This mag bar cost 6$ and still you can be sure it does what it is supposed to : giving you 5000 degrees mag shreds in a blink. A lot of people cannot buy the Doan in their area. This Coghlans is a good product too and as a backup firestarter, it will perform very well. April 13, 2014
