Rated 5 out of 5 by fishnphreak Ugly Stick great for deep sea fishing
I guess Dick's didn't like my last review where I disparaged the wharf rats who stole my Ugly Stick and Penn GTI330 reel. That setup served me well for 10 years of deepsea fishing out of Gloucester, MA. The biggest I caught with it was a 15 lb cod. I have had no trouble with my Ugly Stick, which was a MH deepsea pole. Which is why I am looking to replace it - but this time beefing up the game. There have been 55lb halibut starting to be caught. Also I have seen tuna jumping out of the water one half mile off Race Point in Ptown. Perhaps jigging with a heavy setup could reel in a 50-100lb fish with 65lb Powerpro braid. I am interested in a jigging/spinning setup as I want to cast to the tuna as well as jig for deep sea monsters. I feel for the fisherman whose rod broke on a 10lb striper. That had to be a defect in the rod and he deserved a full refund plus some. I once had a new surf rod that snapped in half when the pole twisted a certain way while fighting a fish maybe 10 lbs. There had to be a radial defect in that pole. I don't remember the manufacturer. A lot of charter captains around here give their clients Ugly Sticks as they are reliable and reasonably priced. Good enough for me. I hope my review gets published this time. - Fred, Hubbardston, MA.

There is no way a 10 pound striper could break this rod. The rod must have been damaged or it's someone from another rod company that hates ugly stik for being so inexpensive and awesome! My rod works unbelievably well! Buy and be happy!

Bought this pole at Dick's for striper fishing. When I set on the very first fish (only a 10lb striper) the pole snapped in half. I contacted Shakespeare directly because of their five year warranty. I was told that I would have to send them the pole for their inspection. It would cost $7.99 for a mailing tube and $10 to mail by UPS, and I would have to include a check for $9.99 for return mail. Kind of expensive for a $70 pole. Took the pole back to Dick's and got a full refund right on the spot. Spent a little more and got a G Loomis rod.

I can feel the lightest nibble with this pole plus the strength is amazing. Great buy for the price.
