Rated 1 out of 5áby peteer01 This is a *heavy* bike, with very difficult shifters
My son is five years old, and can ride the 20" aluminium kids mountain bike that we finally settled on after test riding several bikes. Some were good and some were so-so, but the Diamondback Cobra stood out for two reasons: The steel frame makes it significantly heavier than its competition, which have aluminium frames, and it's shifter is incredible difficult to use.
The Diamondback Lustre and Diamondback Octane are both 20" bikes with aluminium frames, sadly they were not in stock at the Dick's we were at, and we were unable to try them and find out if the shifting on either of those was easier.
If your son/daughter needs to handle a bike that's more than half their body weight, with shifters they can't be expected to use while riding, it's going to increase the chance of them getting discouraged and frustrated.
Make sure you put your child on the bike for a test ride before you buy them a bike. I personally found it to be worth the extra money to find a model with a good build that was reasonably lightweight, with gears he can use.

Rated 4 out of 5áby southwestnative Shifter is hard to use but.......
I am surprised people gave this bike such bad reviews. My son loves it! We have the previous green one, bought at Dick's. Its sturdy easy to ride on and off road and a nice quality bike for the price. Yes the shifter is difficult for a child the age the bike is designed for but I think the rest of the attributes of the bike make up for it.

Rated 1 out of 5áby Jeffrey H HORRIBLE... do not buy DiamondBack
I am now the 5th person to write about the hard gear shifter. DiamondBack are notorious for this and it will ruin your kids excitement over their new bike. I am so mad for buying this bike - especially at this price. DO NOT BUY DiamondBack... warning!

The bike is great for my 7 year old. The only issue is that it is hard for him to shift. I have to shift it for him.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Stevie Top quality pre-teen bike
Great bike, easy to assemble and only slight adjustment to dÚrailleur needed out of box. Hard to find featured in most big box stores, including 6-speed to learn shifting. 20" perfect for 8 yr old rider. Under $180 shipped, and delivered 2 days early just in time for Xmas. Thanks Dick's!
