Rated 5 out of 5áby field and Stream 40L external frame pack It`s great. I love it. It`s a good pack. Many zippered compartments. And two front load pockets. Perfect. October 8, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5áby This is my overnight backpack A good intermediate pack. I like an external frame pack for overnights, lots of room on top to add a sleeping bag tent or anything else. lighter frames start to get pricey quick. Again, good middle of the road price/performance. It is VERY comfortable on all day hikes. Lots of strap adjustments to make it fit just right with minimal floppy excess straps. The pockets on the belt are great. they are a nice size and easy to get to and easy to open and close with the pack on. The only down side is that there is no pocket for a water bag (camel pack) and the water bottle pockets can not be reached without taking off the pack. I was aware of these before I bought it so it's ok by me. September 20, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5áby Great product This is exactly what I was looking for. It's light very durable and holds everything you need for hiking and camping. June 1, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5áby Great product for young scoits Purchased this for my 12 yo Tenderfoot Boy Scout. Adjustable frame allows for different sized boys and can grow with the scout. Fairly light and easy to pack with multiple exposed popes on the frame to hang extra gear. May 9, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5áby Great Day Pack and/or Weekend External Frame Pack I love the features on the pack - I like organizing gear into multiple compartments and this has plenty. Although this is an external frame, I found this pack light while enjoying the comfortable padded support and like the frame's ability to store camping gear (bag/tent/pans) without having to manage to secure it to a frame-less hiking pack. The two large outer pockets hold two 1-liter water bottles in the mesh lining secured by a strap in addition to being able to store items as large as a flash light or storing my 8" knife (as well as food) inside the same pouch. The smaller outer pouches hold items such as snacks or small gear times (I store my multi-knife and folding saw on one side, with pen/paper/tissues in the other). The main compartment is accessible by a flap pouch as seen in the picture (the top of the bag actually folds down like a lawn chair which how the bulk of the pack is secured to the frame). The main compartment separates the bottom half by a "shelf," There is a small inner pouch on the top half of the main compartment. The main compartment has a folding pouch secured by two zippers and I like how the top of pack can add extra protection by being cinched down with the attached straps. That top flaps holds plenty of food items like a bag of trail mix and bars, etc. The bottom half is accessible by the zippered pouch you see in the display picture. I didn't take any risks with the potential for the flap to open up while hiking so I secured both zippers to a carabiner on one of five small loops on the outside of the same flap. I was able to store a large non-compressed outer shell, a synthetic vest, fire starter/hatchet, large tarp, medic pouch, food, etc. quite well for 40L. The more I review my load, lighten it up I will have more room, if not lighter for when I added camping equipment. The waist belt pouches do not look like what you see in the display photo. I personally think it is useless - I'd rather have a place to hook my water bottle. I find it difficult to access while you are hiking. The belt strap isn't easy to use though it does the job helping ensure the load is secured to your hips. The shoulder straps are comfortable, the chest strap helps distribute the load. I really do not like how the pack's sides are secured to the frame. They are secured by velcro straps. I have not had problems with it (yet); however, on my first outing I realized that one of the four were undone. I'm not sure of the purpose for velcro, but the main bulk of the pack, the top portion, is attached to the frame. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and this pack does not wick moisture too well. On my second outing attempting to hike up Mount Defiance in Oregon (snow dusting at higher elevations), I made sure all my stored layers, medic pouch, etc, were placed in zip loc bags. The down pour both times made this pack wet on the top and side pockets - the bottom pouch was fine during my hike. I am looking for a bag to place over this pack but I have to guess because there is not one that comes with it in addition to I'm not sure how one will work with the external frame. The gear/clothing in ziploc bags did stay dry. Overall, I do like this pack. I think it's great for my day trips, weekend outings or week long trips; however, I don't recommend this pack as a hunting pack or on long distances such as Pacific Crest Trail or AT. During breaks, the pack is kept of the wet ground because of the frame and I can better secure and organize more equipment also because of the frame. November 26, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5áby Boy Scout Perfection! This was purchased for my 11 yr. old son for Scouts. It has proven to be the perfect pack for a youth with room to grow. The external frame expands to accommodate growth, the size allows him to finally pack everything on the recommended list into a single bag that he can still manage. The external frame gives him endless options for attaching additional gear as needed and will allow the bag to continue in functional use well into adulthood. This truly is the perfect Scout bag that will be a purchase to last for many years to come. We have tested the bag on mountain hikes and Scout camping trips it functions wonderfully the well padded shoulder and waste pads maintain comfort and allow for balancing the weight. Rated 4 out of 5áby Best external pack I've tried. Only have an issue with the belt and strap padding I do love the pack. Its capacity and storage options are unrivaled by other external packs. The belt padding could use an upgrade as well as the should straps. If this had better padding in those areas as well as better breathing in the back rest, I'd probably never upgrade. I'd still recommend this pack to anyone looking to use it for hunting, hiking under five days, or as a camping backpack to keep everything all together in one spot. July 31, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5áby this is the greatest external frame backpack currently This backpack feels so much better than the top of the line internal backpacks because it packs well, its got a beautiful color and frame assembly, it all ties in with the feel and quality of this backpack. I love it June 24, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5áby Best backpack for backpacking, is comfortable They don't make much external frame backpacks anymore and that's a bad thing because internal frame backpacks lack a lot of good features you get from an external backpacks. Jansport used to be the leader in external backpacks and even today those old frame backpacks are still good but if want you new, this Field & Stream does the job and it does it well. Internal frame backpacks lack where you can't pack certain things, where everything is hanging outside and that is a complete disadvantage. If you got a 10lb or 20lb tent with poles, a folding light weight backpack chairs, backpack solar panels, pots & pans, backpack shovels are etc things you can't put inside an internal pack but with this backpack you can and today there are things that are getting lighter than 20 years ago (like big tents, chairs, stoves are better today but that does mean you can't put everything in an internal backpack) but there are things you may really want to hike in and an external is your best friend. Sure top of the line internal backpacks are slick looking but they lack the real features you really need in hiking in an expedition and personally I don't know why they don't make more size models in this Field & Stream backpack because they do a fantastic job with its construction compared to Kelty external backpacks and you even could go ever further if you wanted a carbon fiber frame instead of the aluminum frame, a bike store may have carbon fiber poles that they could modify it to make it ever lighter but to be honest this backpack is already light. I really thank Field & Stream for making such a great backpack but also the price, the price, it's very cheap and it's great quality too. June 18, 2015
