Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Hoop - Poor Instructions I just purchased and installed this hoop at my home. If you're doing it by yourself as well, get ready to work! The whole process should take about 5 days to set up, but only because you really should wait for the cement to cure for at least 72 hours before putting up the backboard. Overall the hoop is great, very sturdy and with minimal backboard movement. Don't think you can beat it for the price and I wouldn't think that hoops which are twice as expensive would really offer anything better to warrant that spend. The one thing I will warn new buyers about though is the instructions on how to set the post in the ground. Here's why: 1) There is no way you can have one person hold the post upright in the ground while others fill the surrounding hole with the concrete and expect the post to stay level. Not happening! And after the concrete is pored, the way they have the 2x4's and 50lb bags of sand shown in the instructions is not going ton work either. What you need to do is create a structure around the pole to support it during the process. We used 3 2x6 boards with lawn stakes to create a sort of teepee. Once we had it steady and drop dead level, we then filled the concrete. 24 hours later after the concrete was solid, we removed the teepee. 2) The use of cinder block in the hole to set the pole on is a little ridiculous and sets up too much margin for error. They really should have just made the pole longer. But since they didn't, be extra precise when measuring out where your pole will set in the cement after pored. 3) Make sure you buy at least one extra bag of cement. Nothing worse than getting right to the end and realizing you need just a tad more. As long as you heed the warnings above, you should have a great time with this hoop. June 5, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Better than Expected - So Far There are two names for this product. Both are made by Escalade Sports. The Goaliath B2253 is made exclusively for Dicks and the Silverback GB54ig are the same product. It seems the only difference is aesthetics and warranty terms. Also, there are two versions of the product. One you bury the pole in the ground, the other you install J-Hooks in the cement and then bolt the pole to them. I purchased the the one that you bury in the ground. The J-hook version is 100-200 more and from what I've read, could have more shaking. My review is based on the Goaliath B2253 thats pole is buried in the ground. First off, I live in NY and digging a hole in shale infested ground is by far the hardest part. I was unable to get the hole the full 32" because I ultimately found myself in solid rock about 26" down. So, I couldn't use the full 16" masonary block approach. Instead I used a smaller 10" block in the hole, mounted the pole on top and poured about 560lbs of concrete in the hole. Once cured, I added another 50lbs of quick dry cement into the pole itself. Total 610lbs. It seems very solid. Joining the pole together itself was a breeze for me (sorry for those who struggled). Utilizing two people, I joined the two pieces (past the orange mark of 6") on the first attempt. Dropping it straight on a solid wood board placed on the pavement. If you search youtube for a silverback/goaliath pole install, there is a movie that shows you how to complete this part. The rest of the install took about 3 hours with two people (three during actual backboard mount). We backed a pickup truck up to the pole and completed most of the install with one man on the truck, other on a step ladder. You do need a drill. The backboard itself is HEAVY so we briefly asked my wife to help with that (about 10 min) to use 2 people to hold in place while one secured it. I've had it installed for about 10 days now. The adjustment of height is very easy and the performance of the hoop is great. There is very little shaking at 8ft, even less at 10ft. The glass backboard rebounds true and seems like really good quality. The steel pole and parts are all good "medium duty" quality. Not cheap or weak at all. I'm a little nervous about the winter (freeze heaving) because I couldn't get the hole down the full 32", but time will tell. Either way, that is my problem, but this product is GREAT for a backyard hoop. Do not hesitate buying this product, but be prepared to work. I used traditional cement (not quick dry, except in pole) and overall it took me about 6 days before we were shooting hoops....one full day for hole, one full day to mount pole in cement, 3 days to cure and one day to install backboard/hoop. I hope you enjoy your Goaliath hoop as much as we do (children ages 4 - 11, plus adults play on this hoop). September 4, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Product You can't get any betterr than this for $399, as the system is good quality. The only oddity is that I had to drill holes in the steel rim to mount the bottom backboard guards. These should have been pre-drilled. It took 5-6 hours to dig hole and cement, let cure for 3 days, then another 5-6 hours to finish installation (which was fairly easy and instructions are clear). The backboard is very heavy and will require another person to install that piece. There is very little vibration except for side shots, anything straight on, the backboard barely moves, overall I am very pleased. September 21, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Kids love it I love it, looks great easy to put together with help. Easy to put together, asked for 9 bags of concrete but only needed 5.5 FYI looks great in front of the house wish it was black but couldn't be happier. October 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Super Durable Product While browsing ads this morning, I noticed the Goaliath Basketball Systems were on sale. We've owned one of these systems for over ten years. It has held up fabulous. Although not recommended, it has even survived 20-something males setting the height at 8', so they can dunk the ball. The one time we needed a part, it was provided quickly and for free. Even the pad is still in decent shape. That says a lot for something that has been in place, every day of the year, for over 10 years. June 29, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome!!!!! Unbelievable hoop!!!! Everything is good. The backboard the rim and the pole!! I highly recommend this hoop to anyone. I've been through around four or five nets, this is the best one by far! April 29, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great deal! Very, very happy with this hoop! My husband installed it in two days! My daughter is very happy and enjoying the game! Price is unbeatable! September 2, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great hoop for the money I read all the reviews before I purchased this. It is excellent. I was concerned about the vibration before I bought it but there is very little. When putting the two poles together vaseline the two ends of the poles, it makes things easier. I also did not support the pole the way the manual instructs. I built my own scaffold. Great hoop for the money. August 30, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very nice - Straight-forward install and working fine I bought the one with J hooks anchored into the concrete - then bolt post to them. Installation made sense and went smoothly. Took me five or six bangs with posts on cardboard to get the two post sections joined. Leveling with nuts on anchor bolts was straight-forward and I can adjust later if needed. Backboard very heavy. We actually had four adults in the bed of my pickup getting it hung - three holding and one putting bolts in. That took a short time and I recommend backing a truck next to post for this step as it is safer and easier than multiple ladders, etc. Also, set height from tailgate of truck just for stability. Really nice feel to the backboard and minimal movement when you hit the rim. Adjustment is easy and I really like that I can remove the crank so someone cannot just randomly walk up and change it as was possible with the system I replaced with this one. Thanks June 4, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ggreat for the price I was a little concerned because said this hoop was whobbly. It wabbles a little but for the cost and quality it is acceptable. Worth the money. June 23, 2014
