Since 2006 I'd been playing with "knock off" super game improvement irons (steel shafts) and hybrids (graphite shafts). They were fine since I'd never played with anything else. While playing at a course away from home in 2013, I rented some 2012 Taylormades at the course. I shot a 40 on the front 9. Granted, I was playing the senior tees (with two other golfers) but I certainly noticed a positive difference. It was time, I decided, to investigate the possibility of new clubs.
After doing extensive research, and spending two hours with a fitting pro, I chose the Taylormade rescues 4 & 5, and irons 6 - AW, all with graphite shafts. I'm 64 years old and weigh 163 pounds. I'm not a long-ball hitter and depend on accuracy more than distance.
It took me probably 6 or 7 rounds on the course to make the adjustment. However, I could never have imagined that these clubs would make such a difference. I am hitting the ball farther, straighter, and with greater confidence.
I usually play a mountain course in Vermont and used to shoot in the mid-to-high 90s. I am now consistently shooting in the mid-to-high 80s. I'm under no illusion about my limitations as a recreational golfer and, yes, with the graphite shafts the clubs are a bit on the pricey side. However, these clubs have significantly increased my enjoyment of the game and were well worth it.
