Thule Kayak Cradle 4.4 5 29 29
Awesome 2nd set!!! They fix my Yakama bars and stay pretty sturdy. December 4, 2014
Not like they use to make This is basically the same carrier I bought 10 years ago except it is made cheaper. The main problem I've encountered is that the foam rubber that the kayak sits on is not covered with fabric to protect the foam. So after the first use the foam started to tear. They should have kept the fabrication the same as 10 years ago. Other than that, works fine. September 22, 2014
great kayak holder bought this for my daughter. She loves it. Holds the kayak really well July 11, 2014
Damaged My Yukon XL The third time I used my Thule model 815 Kayak Cradle I used it on the highway. I installed it according to the instructions, hand tightening the knobs that hold the J Cradle to the factory cross bars. My kayak is an Old Town Dirigo 120, is is 50 lbs., well below the 75 lb. limit. The kayak traveled well the 30 miles to my river destination, but 5 miles into the return trip the J Cradle slid toward the middle of the crossbar causing it to bend up. The line tied to my bumper was the only reason there was not more damage. I cannot recommend this product. June 24, 2014
Not for every kayak ! I bought an Old Town Vapor 12XTS kayak and saw what great reviews these racks had gotten and bought a pair....just so anyone who has bought the newer style Old Town kayak, the hull is to wide and deep to fit properly in the racks and causes the kayak to act like a sail and moves around while your driving. I used the term sail because a friend driving behind me described it that way ! I brought it to the Adirondacks via the thruway and had to pull over 4 times to re adjust the kayak and I used ratchet straps along with the ones that came with it,.it holds as long as you don't travel faster than 50mph! with any of the older style kayaks im sure these are wonderful racks! Quick setup for your kayak Easily put together, this rack was such a good price that I bought two! Careful though, no locks for the rack August 8, 2013
Thule J-rack I purchased this Thule j-rack online for my kayak recently. Basically, I'm pleased with the rack itself and feel that the price is competitive to other retailers selling the same item. However, my only complaint with it is how it attaches to the luggage rack on my suv. Each j-rack has two pairs of brackets (halves) that sandwich the luggage rack from top and bottom and comes with bolts that go through the brackets. Round plastic knobs with threaded holes inside them are provided to screw onto the studs to pull the brackets together and tighten against the luggage rack. Here's the problem: I think the knobs are meant to be hand-tightened to secure the j-rack to the luggage rack, but hand tightening alone will not sufficiently secure the j-racks, necessitating some tightening with pliers which can cause damage to the knobs with each installation and removal, if the racks are not left on permanently. If the knobs are not tightened with pliers and are only hand tightened, then the wind resistance against the vessel when driving, especially at highway speeds, could cause the j-rack to loosen and the boat to move around, regardless of whether straps are used also. I used pliers to tighten the knobs so my Kayak did not budge, but the knobs are now a bit chewed up by the pliers after one installation even though I had a rag wrapped around them while tightening them (which was difficult). I just didn't feel comfortable with not tightening them with a tool, but perhaps I could have explored using some other kind of tool to prevent damage to the knobs. Unfortunately, I may eventually have to purchase new knobs if these break. My suggestion to the designers at Thule: Maybe create an adjustable "quick release" type bracket similar to the ones for attaching and removing bicycle wheels, push the quick release down to lock in place and lift to release the tension. These should be adjustable to create the proper tension for each luggage rack. June 30, 2013
Excellant They came the day I had to go away. Two days later I got pictures from my wife who had installed them on our car. She said the instructions were easy and they went on the car with no problem. June 19, 2013
Good quality cradle I have an Ascend FS10 fishing kayak which is just 10 ft but heavier and wider than most 10 ft kayaks. The Thule cradle is easy to attach to the roof rack and holds my kayak securely. The straps are high-quality and snug up very well but for my kayak which is 31 in wide, they were barely long enough. Snugged up, I had about 6 inches left over. June 6, 2013
Easy to Use I bought the Thule Kayak rack at the same time that I I bought a kayak. I needed the Thule to get my kayak home so I put the Thule on my car in the parking lot. I did it without any tools (I forgot to bring tools). The Thule was easy to put on the car and you can put it towards the edge of the car (some kayak holders have to be mounted more in the middle of the car). This makes loading the kayak relatively easy for one person. I turn the kayak upside down and put the edge toward the car on the outside edge of the Thule and then push the other side of the kayak up and the Kayak rolls into the right position. The Thule holds the kayak tightly without using the lines that go fore and aft. I'm sure the manufacturer wouldn't recommend this, but I don't travel that far to the nearest lake so I don't bother with those lines and the kayak doesn't budge. Bottom line: easy to use and you can mount it on the edge of the car...a very good product. June 5, 2013
