Rated 4 out of 5 by Thule J-rack I purchased this Thule j-rack online for my kayak recently. Basically, I'm pleased with the rack itself and feel that the price is competitive to other retailers selling the same item. However, my only complaint with it is how it attaches to the luggage rack on my suv. Each j-rack has two pairs of brackets (halves) that sandwich the luggage rack from top and bottom and comes with bolts that go through the brackets. Round plastic knobs with threaded holes inside them are provided to screw onto the studs to pull the brackets together and tighten against the luggage rack. Here's the problem: I think the knobs are meant to be hand-tightened to secure the j-rack to the luggage rack, but hand tightening alone will not sufficiently secure the j-racks, necessitating some tightening with pliers which can cause damage to the knobs with each installation and removal, if the racks are not left on permanently. If the knobs are not tightened with pliers and are only hand tightened, then the wind resistance against the vessel when driving, especially at highway speeds, could cause the j-rack to loosen and the boat to move around, regardless of whether straps are used also. I used pliers to tighten the knobs so my Kayak did not budge, but the knobs are now a bit chewed up by the pliers after one installation even though I had a rag wrapped around them while tightening them (which was difficult). I just didn't feel comfortable with not tightening them with a tool, but perhaps I could have explored using some other kind of tool to prevent damage to the knobs. Unfortunately, I may eventually have to purchase new knobs if these break. My suggestion to the designers at Thule: Maybe create an adjustable "quick release" type bracket similar to the ones for attaching and removing bicycle wheels, push the quick release down to lock in place and lift to release the tension. These should be adjustable to create the proper tension for each luggage rack. June 30, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not for every kayak ! I bought an Old Town Vapor 12XTS kayak and saw what great reviews these racks had gotten and bought a pair....just so anyone who has bought the newer style Old Town kayak, the hull is to wide and deep to fit properly in the racks and causes the kayak to act like a sail and moves around while your driving. I used the term sail because a friend driving behind me described it that way ! I brought it to the Adirondacks via the thruway and had to pull over 4 times to re adjust the kayak and I used ratchet straps along with the ones that came with it,.it holds as long as you don't travel faster than 50mph! with any of the older style kayaks im sure these are wonderful racks! Rated 5 out of 5 by Works Great... I bought this kayak cradle the night before I left on a 500 mile trip with my kayak. The cradle mounted to the factory crossbars of my Highlander with no problems. The straps held the kayak down tightly and did not loosen at all during the trip. I'm well pleased with how the cradle performed. June 4, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Awesome kayak carrier! The Thule Kayak rooftop rack was easy to install, protects and carries kayaks well and makes it easy to load and unload kayaks. We bought two and have driven our two kayaks on 2-hour road trips so far and all went well. Taking them on summer vaca for a 12-hour drive in July. Great product. June 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellant They came the day I had to go away. Two days later I got pictures from my wife who had installed them on our car. She said the instructions were easy and they went on the car with no problem. June 19, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Easy to install Rooftop Kayak Cradle The guys from the boat department helped bring the two kayaks and roof racks to the car. Assembling the rack and then putting the Kayaks on the car only took about 20 minutes. Not bad for newbies! June 4, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Gets the job done My 16 and 11 year old sons were able to install the racks and load their kayaks with no issues. Stayed secure throughout a two hour road trip with high winds. May 1, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good product, beware of short straps Quality product as others have stated, however the included straps are approx 10ft which did not work for our SOT Tandem Wilderness. Had to purchase longer straps to make it work and get our kayak home from the store. Kinda frustrating to figure out in the parking lot and would think they would give you a bit longer strap just to be sure. March 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quick setup for your kayak Easily put together, this rack was such a good price that I bought two! Careful though, no locks for the rack August 8, 2013
