Rated 5 out of 5 by PAB Good Deal! Bought four of them for our family and everyone enjoys them. It tracks well and has great storage areas. it covers a wide variety of weight and height ranges. The drain plug is a great feature. It could improve on the back bungee holders to carry a larger bag. The sale price makes this kayak excellent money value. July 21, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by LaBaJo Great Little Starter Kayak I would definitely recommend as a starter kayak. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as some, but for what it does have, and the price it really can't be beat. I took it out for the first time few days ago and got caught in some very windy/choppy conditions; stability was great and It tracked well. The hull doesn't have much depth so I did get hit with a few waves off the side, but the seat sits higher than the bottom of the hull so any water that collects inside stays below and behind the seat. The cargo area in the back did collect quite a bit of water, but given the conditions I wasn't surprised. If you wanted to put anything back there that you were concerned might get wet I'd put it in a dry bag. The storage hatch behind the seat is handy, and it did stay dry, but if you are trying to get anything out of it and water is in that cargo area you need to be careful, could easily just dump right into that hatch. I'm 6'4", 275 and the comfort was good. If you were any taller I'd test the seat and foot pegs before buying because I think I've got the foot pegs as far back as they'll go. Seat is comfortable, I personally would prefer the back rest to be a little bit taller, but comes with the territory of being a taller guy and I could probably change the seat out if I really wanted. The little phone holder in the front, not really needed, would only put a phone up there if you had a floating water proof case. The bungee cord that holds it in place is pretty tight, but rather not take the risk. The bungees up front are nice, I put a bilge pump up there and it held in place perfectly. The drain plug was handy, easily drained the water after I brought it in. The manufacturer warranty another bonus. All in all a great little kayak. July 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nick17 Made to Explore I bought this kayak about a month ago during the awesome sale at Dick's. So far I've been out on the creeks and rivers enjoying the salt life! It's tracked well and let me discover some really cool islands that are only accessible by boat. It's been everything I wanted and more. The only con would be the location of the dry compartment on the back, but I'm very glad it offers one at least. It's very easy for balancing so no worries there. July 16, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Fluffhead Handles the Chesapeake Bay really well! Bought this during the last boat sale, couldn't be happier. I live right off of the Chesapeake Bay, and this is perfect to carry right from the house down to the beach for a quick launch. As long as the waves cooperate this thing tracks well and is quite speedy... this would have been a 5-star review, but I've noticed 2 minor problems over the 3 or 4 weeks I've had the kayak... 1 - the day hatch does NOT stay dry if you take any water on into the storage area back there. 2 - there are foam inserts to the sides of the seat, both have come loose - note: this doesn't seem to be affecting anything, and I have yet to call Pelican and ask for replacements, so I don't know how much of an issue this really is... otherwise the kayak has held up quite well considering some of the water conditions I've run it through (2+ ft waves to test stability, etc) and the dolphins down here seem to love swimming around it... :) July 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Climber Great starter kayak! This is a wonderful starter kayak for the beginner or casual weekend kayaker. It it light weight so easy to mount on the roof of your car by yourself or with a friend yet sturdy and tough plastic to handle the bumps and dings of heavy use. There is a nice water tight compartment behind your seat and a large storage bay in the rear. The adjustable foot rests come in handy when you are paddling hard against the wind or current. The adjustable seat is comfortable and fits your backside nicely. The bottom of the kayak has a beautifully designed wedge in the front to split the water/waves and a nice dual channel flat bottom in the middle to make it a very stable ride. My wife and I love them and have been in lakes with over two foot waves from the speed boats nearby and this kayak was super stable. I highly recommend this model. My only comment is that I wish it had some metal tie downs in the back to hold larger bags, the bungee mesh does not expand enough to hold down a small waterproof bag or lunch cooler. July 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by alexanderkj Excelllent Kayak Took this kayak out for the first time today. We traveled 20 miles on a mild river. The kayak tracked really well. It is very light and easy to maneuver. Great product for the price! June 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by SUMNER517 GREAT BUY! For a rookie kayaker like myself this kayak was a great kayak to start with. I am 5ft9 185lbs and I can control it with ease. I have no problems picking it up and carrying it or putting it on top of my car. Also, it is easy to fish off of, I have no issues catching Large Mouth Bass on this kayak. I'd totally recommend this to anyone! June 23, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Yolanda Excellent for beginners My fiance and I bought these. He is 6' 200 lb and I am 5'1 115. We both loved them. Having never had kayak before, it tracked well and very easy to handle. Light weight as well. June 22, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by jas88lee Decent for the money We bought this and another model Pelican. This is the more comfortable kayak, but some of the design needs rethinking. The screw-top hatch sits flush with the cargo area behind the seat, and that area can get full of water. If you need to get in the compartment, you can risk soaking your phone when you open the hatch. There's a "phone holder" in the cockpit... a bungee strap on the top of the boat that we're supposed to put a phone in? I think not! This is a stupid feature. I wish that real estate had been used another way. That said, the cargo area can hold more than a traditional kayak can, which is nice for longer trips. All in all, I'm very happy with my Maverick. I'll be adding a rod holder or two shortly, and it will then be the perfect kayak for me... June 20, 2014
