Rated 4 out of 5 by Papaman Just what we needed Purchased a couple of days ago for $249 at Dicks for my 65 year old very petite wife ( 105 lbs.). Needed something easy to load and unload and light weight for my wife to paddle. This boat meets those needs. Will be used primarily on the central Florida spring fed streams. Took it to a local lake yesterday and my wife was very please with how it tracked and how easy it was for her to paddle/handle. Before we purchased it we watched the Pelican video where they dropped one from a height of 30 ft. and drove over one with a pickup truck to demonstrate how strong the seams are. I noticed two of the seat screws were missing so I contacted Pelican customer service and they are shipping me a new seat--(how is that for customer service)? I would have rated it as a 5 star but we've only had it a few days. After we paddle it this summer I will update my review. May 23, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Bob Perfect recreational kayak I purchased this kayak earlier in the summer, along with a Future Beach Fusion 10 for my wife. We are both pleased with our respective kayaks, but I certianly prefer my Maverick. I bought it with regular, recreational use as well as angler use in mind, and it serves both purposes perfectly. I'm 6'-4" 205lbs and it handles me with ease. Pros: - very light, about 10lbs lighter than the Fusion 10 which makes a big difference when wrangling them on and off the car. - The seat is fantastic, and the adjustable seat back works great. Superior padding to anything in this price range. - Very stable, even when fishing and reaching around for tackle. Also, easy to enter and exit due to the stability. - Knee pads are a plus. - Rear storage compartment is perfect for fishing gear, water-tight hatch is indeed water tight. Cons: - Nalgene bottle holder between the legs is great, but I would have preferred a proper cup holder. Fusion 10 wins in that category. - Drain plug is an absolute pain to remove. It's a compression style plug, vs the screw in style found on various others. Screw in style is much easier to deal with. - Thinner plastic material slightly deforms when strapped to the roof of the car, but it seems to always come back to shape. Despite thinner material, no concerns of durability for me. - White hull shows every mark and scrape, gets dirty quickly. Occasional wash takes care of that. Long and the short of it is that I'm beyond pleased with this as my recreational kayak, excels in every category! August 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Anthony Good to learn in or reentry into the sport This is a good beginner kayak. Purchased one after years of not kayaking, family is now old enough to go. The cockpit is roomy and fairly comfortable; I?m over 6 foot & 225 pounds. On flat water it tracks well and is stabile even in some cross wind chop. Easily paddles up stream and with good maneuverability. Ran some class III water on the Gauley River (WV) with it and it is out of its element on this rougher water. The knee pads need to be longer, my legs rub right where they end, but no big deal. The rope on the handle broke the second time loading into the truck. The foam inserts around the seat and haul broke lose. The plastic pin pulled out of the foam. After a couple of hours paddling I noticed the bow was riding high and I lost a lot of maneuverability. The storage deck had completely filled with water from the splash off the rapids. The small dry hatch also seeped as it was under water. Keep this kayak on flat water or even small rapids and it performs well. May 27, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Redneck kayaker Large person welcome I am new to kayaking and have been out around a total of 10 times this summer. This kayak has some great features- Pros- fairly light weight, I could carry and load this myself if need be -Very stable on water - Plenty of room for a larger person -->I'm around 5'10 and right at 295lbs and this kayak carries me great. -Open/Net cargo area (I personally do not trust the water tight hatch-- I wont risk putting anything in there that may be ruined by water) -Fairly comfortable seat Cons- Rear open hatch will get some water due to boat wakes or leaning to far to the side. - While the opening is good sized ( I have no trouble getting in or out--- or tossing my legs on the top of the kayak while in the water) I would prefer a longer opening. I would highly recommend this kayak! I have been using mine on small rivers and lakes. September 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Zoom24 Great Kayak, Great Price! I purchased the Pelican Maverick after a lot of searching online and reading reviews. When Dicks Sporting Goods had their boat sale, I decided it was time to make my purchase. They already have the best prices on kayaks, but when you catch them on sale, it makes it just that much better. I purchased my kayak just before Memorial day and have used it three times. Once in a small lake here in Asheville NC to get the feel of the boat, and now two more times on river trips. It is very stable, easy to steer, tracks fairly well for a small boat and has some nice features like a comfortable seat, nice dry storage and convenient storage bay for a small cooler. Another plus with this boat is it's weight. It only ways about 38 lbs, so it's easy to put on top of an SUV and easy for one person to carry to the water. Another huge plus is the lifetime warranty from Pelican! Buy one and enjoy it! June 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Waterbug Great value for the money Like others, I bought the Pelican Maverick on sale before Memorial day. It tracks well for a 10ft. kayak and I found the seat comfortable. For a person of my age, It's easy to get in and out of with plenty of leg room. The kayak is light weight, yet has a durable hull. I like the rear storage area and the drain plug is a nice feature as well. For the money, this kayak is hard to beat. June 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by LaBaJo Great Little Starter Kayak I would definitely recommend as a starter kayak. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as some, but for what it does have, and the price it really can't be beat. I took it out for the first time few days ago and got caught in some very windy/choppy conditions; stability was great and It tracked well. The hull doesn't have much depth so I did get hit with a few waves off the side, but the seat sits higher than the bottom of the hull so any water that collects inside stays below and behind the seat. The cargo area in the back did collect quite a bit of water, but given the conditions I wasn't surprised. If you wanted to put anything back there that you were concerned might get wet I'd put it in a dry bag. The storage hatch behind the seat is handy, and it did stay dry, but if you are trying to get anything out of it and water is in that cargo area you need to be careful, could easily just dump right into that hatch. I'm 6'4", 275 and the comfort was good. If you were any taller I'd test the seat and foot pegs before buying because I think I've got the foot pegs as far back as they'll go. Seat is comfortable, I personally would prefer the back rest to be a little bit taller, but comes with the territory of being a taller guy and I could probably change the seat out if I really wanted. The little phone holder in the front, not really needed, would only put a phone up there if you had a floating water proof case. The bungee cord that holds it in place is pretty tight, but rather not take the risk. The bungees up front are nice, I put a bilge pump up there and it held in place perfectly. The drain plug was handy, easily drained the water after I brought it in. The manufacturer warranty another bonus. All in all a great little kayak. July 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by mark114 Worth the money Searched a lot of kayaks before buying this one. Stable enough for novice but still easy to maneuver. Light enough to carry short distances. Ample storage. Short enough to easily store on garage wall and carry in truck bed. Consider it comfortable after a 4 hour trip. Also bought a 230cm paddle. Any shorter and I think I would be hitting the sides of kayak too much. $70-80 dollar paddle worth it for the lightness. If in choppy lake and taking on water, I got a $15 hand bildge just in case I am too far from shore to dump out water. Sit in will keep you warmer than a sit on especially in windy conditions. Happy with my purchase. October 14, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by smr1987 Comfortable, easy - overall awesome little boat! I took advantage of the great sale Dick's had going on the week before Memorial Day. I jumped at the chance to get the kayak I had already been looking at/seriously considering for such a low price ($249!). The guy at the store was happy to help me get everything I needed (paddle, life vest, car rack and obviously the kayak) and was not pushy - he totally understood that I was tight on cash and was straight forward when it came to different prices on all of the products. I took it out the very next day! It was easy enough to load and unload on the car on my own (I'm a 26yr/old female at about 5'4" with a Grand Marquee). I went out on a small, local lake and paddled around for about an hour to get a feel for it. It's wicked comfortable, super easy to maneuver around in the water, it picks up speed with ease. I'm definitely looking forward to spending the summer with it. I've wanted one for so long and I just couldn't pass up the great deal - I'm so happy I went for it! May 26, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Randy336 Good yak for the money My wife and I are new to yaking but not water sports or fishing. Bought two yaks July 9th and have used them about six times (3 hours each trip on a moderate river with deep water and shallow areas of less than 6" with rocks dragging, before writing this. One was the Pelican Maverick 100X and the other an Old Town Trip 10. Dick's associates were great in their knowledge and helping to load. The Pelican is a great yak for the money. It is not really equipped for fishing but with a little effort and about $75.00 you can turn it into a fishing yak. Very stable and so far a durable hull. This boat is much better than the Old Town Trip 10 which cost $200.00 more and had quality control issues. I recommend the Pelican for beginners ,which we are. I don't think you will disappointed. I wish I had bought two Pelicans instead of the Old Town. July 31, 2014
