I would definitely recommend buying the vivofit it really gets you moving with the red line but I would suggest buying the heart rate monitor to accurately detect how many calories you actually burn.

I absolutely LOVE my vivofit fitness band. It doesn't come with an instruction manual, but the website that you log all your data through has a link to the manual--easy access and easy to understand. I only had to refer to the manual to figure out 2 minor things, the rest is pretty self explanatory.
There were no reviews when I bought mine, so I was a little hesitant to buy, but this product does everything it says it does. It gives me a daily step goal based on my activity levels and whether I reached the goal of the day before. It lets you know how many steps you've taken and how many are left to meet your daily goal, and it also translates this into miles traveled.
I input my height and weight, and it accurately tracks the number of calories I burn based on my activity and basal metabolic rate. The heart rate monitor improves the accuracy of this count, but I only use the heart rate monitor when I'm running and doing Insanity. I've heard that some people have problems with chafing with the chest strap heart rate monitors, but I haven't experienced this. I don't even feel the chest strap when I'm working out.
I love syncing my band with my computer to see how much I moved during my sleep, and to see how my heart rate moved through the 5 different zones, giving me my max heart rate and average heart rate.
The website you use to review data is easy to navigate and provides any and all information you can think of. My interest in fitness and nutrition is borderline obsessive, and this device tells me everything I want to know AND pushes me to work out more to meet my step goal.
The only downside is that I don' t know many other people who have them, so I haven't really had a chance to compete with friends (although I'm trying to convince all my friends and parents to buy one too), but there's still the option to compete with strangers on the website if you're into that.
I hope this was helpful! I absolutely love my fitness band, it's definitely worth the $170!
