Rated 4 out of 5 by excelent boat I bought this boat about 4 years ago, its been an EXCELENT boat. I've had this boat on lakes and rivers and never had any problems. It tracks perfectly on the water. the rear dry hatch works GREAT! the cock pit is very roomy, and the dry hatch is also very spacious too. I have not had any leaking except after rolling many times, but with minimal water leaking. This boat is difficult to roll, due to the flat wide bottom, it takes effort to get this boat to tip (VERY STABLE). CONS: This boat does not have any thigh braces or hip pads. This boat does not have a drain plug I modified my boat and put in a drain plug, thigh braces and hip pads. This boat is an EXCELENT boat for the money. This boat is GREAT for ALL types of water, from lakes, to streams to rivers. I've paddled this boat on flat water to white cap waves to class III rapids. I do recamend getting a spray skirt for this boat. April 21, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great recreational kayak We bought a pair of these (one blue/green, one red/yellow) from Dick's in May of '14. We have paddled them in 8 different bodies of Vermont's waters (lakes, ponds, calm rivers) in the first two months and have been very pleased. They feel rugged but not too heavy as we load and unload them from the SUV roof. The seats are more comfortable than the generic rental kayaks we'd used before. Both the seat and the foot pegs adjust well. They have nice stability, even in the bouncy chop of a wind blown lake. They handle well and paddle easily enough, but tracking is inconsistent and requires a bit of attention, but that hasn't been an issue for us. I think that's just the reality of an 11 foot boat. The dry hatch has stayed dry. They don't have a drain plugs, so if water splashes in, there's bailing in order when you're done. These are wonderful for casual exploration, a nice step up from entry level tubs and more affordable than the bigger fancier models. June 24, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Perfect starter kayak As others have said the tracking isn't the best, but for what this cost me on sale ($350) it is unbeatable. I got used to the tracking in about two minutes so it was never an issue. I've been out about 20 times over four months and love it! I can follow dolphins in it while paddling at 25% effort so once i come on a group of them it isn't any effort to keep up. The cockpit is huge so its easy to get in and out. That also means a little extra water can splash in on choppy days but it is a fair trade to be able to move around easily. The seat is comfy and at 6'1" and 210 i have no problems. As someone else said, I will probably get a better kayak in a year or two, but I didn't want to spend that much money until I was more experienced and had a better idea of what I wanted and if I would be on the water enough to justify paying more. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great kayak I bought this a few weeks ago when they had the sale. I'm new to kayaking so keep that in mind but I love this kayak! I'm a big guy, (6'4 270), and I find it to be very comfortable. It's easy to load into my truck and I can bring along whatever I might need for a day on the water due to the nice compartment in the back. It tracks great on the river and is pretty fast for a rec boat. All in all a great purchase. July 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for intended use--and more This is a great little kayak for creeks, streams, and fast moving rivers up to class III rapids. You could use it for lake and calm ocean (close to shore) use as well, but then you may want to buy a longer kayak that would track better. It tracks and maneuvers as well as it's size would suggest. It maneuvers worse than an 8 ft kayak but much better than a 14 ft, and vice-versa it tracks much better than an 8ft kayak and worse than a 14 ft kayak. This is what makes it ideal for creeks, streams, and narrow rivers where it is long enough to track fairly well but short enough to maneuver when called upon. I bought this kayak mainly for weekend camping trips with friends. This usually involves leisurely flat water in winding streams and rivers, but also involves some slight whitewater excursions. I wanted something cheap enough I could abuse fairly well while being big enough to store a weekends worth of gear, clothes, and supplies while also being small enough to be able to maneuver well in tight, technical rapids. This kayak performed all the above admirably. While this kayak's rigidity is pretty good for being plastic, it will never match the rigidity of a fiberglass kayak--it does flex, especially on the bottom when running over rocks during whitewater use. This does make it harder to paddle than a fiberglass kayak, but then again a fiberglass kayak would easily cost twice as much (and usually more) and not be able to take as much abuse. This little baby was able to hold 3 sets of clothes in dry bags, 3 soft ice chests of the 9 can variety (2 behind the seat, 1 between my legs), plus typical camping gear such as my full size tent, backpacking stove, utensils, flashlights, towels, hygiene products, etc., with room to spare if I needed. I am 5'10" 180lbs and the kayak does not appear weighed down even though I store upwards of 60lbs of 'gear' (over 20lbs of the weight was due to beer, in full disclosure). Weekend camping trips isn't exactly what it was intended for, but it does so quite nicely as we are mostly socializing and not in any hurry to get done anytime soon. In any event, even weighed down with my 'necessities' it still outperforms the canoes. Without any gear, it glides as well or better than any non fiberglass kayak less than 12 ft in length. For what it's worth, the seat is pretty comfortable for a kayak, especially a 'cheap' one, but let's not get carried away: sit in anything for a few hours at a time and unless it's a plush recliner it's going to bother you a bit and need to be adjusted from time to time. Also, the rear storage cover is water resistant, but not fully waterproof. As long as you remain upright it can take the occasional dunk as well as any water that naturally washes over the kayak during choppy water. I've never found any water inside the dry storage when this was the case. However, I had the misfortune once of having the kayak submerged under a log for a few minutes before I could dislodge it. When I opened the cover I found about a quart of water inside, which isn't much but absolutely enough to ruin electronics. So if you need to absolutely keep things dry (clothing, electronics, etc.), put them in dry bags before putting them in the dry storage compartment. One last thing of note: if you intend to take it out in the rain or whitewater or just want to be prepared for the unexpected shower, you will want a spray skirt. It takes size medium skirt. I bought a medium Coleman skirt for my kayak and it fit snugly around the cockpit rim May 1, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect for us. We own three Kayaks. We have the wilderness systems tsunami 145, the trophy 126 and the perception sport rhythm 11. We travel the river systems of Ky on the weekends. This boat is perfect for that. It has plenty of dry storage and the hatch seals nice and tight. It is the perfect size for class 1+or lite class 2. It is very easy to maneuver in tight narrow passages plus it has enough sustain to coast the long flats with very mild paddling. It is a great all around boat for the beginner to moderate level paddler. The stability is good and the boat just cuts through the water with ease. Each boat has a specific purpose but this boat is very well for many situations. We have been very pleased with the quality and value of this boat. October 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome, stylish little yak My hubbs and I received two fishing kayaks as gifts for xmas and were excited to finally get them out on the water after a very long and harsh winter. He is a tall man at 6'5" and was not able to extend his legs in the 12ft Excursion, his knees felt like they were at his chin! The opening was too big for me at much closer to 5' tall. We loaded them up and took them back to our local Dick's store and the manager was very helpful in finding us the perfect kayaks for our specific wants/needs and kindly exchanged them. He got the Old Town Angler and I got this one. Molded from solid, quality material and has a large, dry well at the rear. It maneuvers easily and and glides along the water with ease. The seat is very comfortable with good back support for long days on the water. I find zero problem with tracking like some other reviews. Thanks to Dick's for the knowledgeable manager who helped us choose these great kayaks. We are looking forward to years of adventures in our awesome new water rides! May 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by a few points about reviewing kayaks This is a good kayak for its price. Due to the hull, it doesn't track the best, but is very good for beginners or an occasional kayaker. Few tips for other reviewers: An 11 foot will not track better or perform better than it's 13 foot counter part. An 11 foot will not out race a 13 foot counter part, especially with someone of more strength who has done this for a while. Weight distribution in the kayak will make it turn more in one direction. If you lean to the right it will also go right. If you lean left it will go left. Please consider these points before comparing as you are comparing apples to oranges and not apples to apples. Thank you! July 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best you can get for the price. I purchased this kayak this spring on sale and with an additional discount it came to just under $350 total. I've been out on it 2 times, once on Presque Isle Bay and another on the Allegheny Reservoir in Sugar Bay. The kayak tracks much better than my husbands larger fishing style yak. I didn't notice a pull to the left like others and over all thought it handled very well. I think it handles even better with more weight and higher winds. If you want to spend under $400 and are looking for a yak to take out on day trips or short camping trips this machine can't be beat. I highly recommend it! Splurge on higher quality paddles with the savings it makes a huge difference! June 24, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by The Good and the Bad I just purchased the Perception Sport Rhythm to add to our Perception fleet of 4 Swifty's. We wanted a larger boat to accommodate a bigger payload of 'stuff ', and this kayak fit the size and weight carrying capacity nicely. The price was nice too. The seat is much more comfortable than our old Swifty's as well, sporting more padding and adjustable back height. My only complaint with this kayak is it's inability to track a straight line. I noticed that if you lightly paddle you perform less correcting, but if you try to power it forward, it keeps pulling hard to the Port side. Oh well. It's a great looking boat. October 6, 2014
