I own both the 7 and 10 foot version of this rod and reel combo. I use these for surf fishing about 2 weeks each year. Since these spend most of the year in storage I was looking for an affordable option. The rod is typical ugly stik, tough and durable but not real sensitive. They are also pretty heavy. I have had one ugly stik rod for over 20 years. I expect these will also last a long time. The quality of the Encore reel is a little suspect. It is not very smooth. However, I have not had any issues with them yet. I have even gotten them sandy and wet. They continue to work. I recently upgraded to a penn sargus reel and it is a major improvement. Overall I feel this is a good value and better quality than most other combos in this price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Giants_babe Great starter Stik
This is my 1st Stik puchase but been fishing with them for a while now from other friends. Just used it last week for the 1st time to try for some Leopard sharks but no go..just a starfish. I'll probably change out the reel later on but like I said, as a starter & 1st time purchase, I'm pretty satisfied with it. Now I can go fishing without having to ask to borrow someone's rod! Plus I got an awesome deal from buying online, so points for that too

I own multiple ugly sticks and loved them all, this one is no different. It is great for surf fishing the tides. No problems with this combo on my end. I use it chunking for blues and stripers with 30 lbs test. Pulls fish in no problem, casts with ease like all my other ugly sticks. No problems with the reel yet, but I dont put mine in the sand and clean the saltwater off after every use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by JB Great for offshore saltwater fishing!
Can catch up to 20 pound bombs with this bad boy! Not a bad price tag- I got the 7 footer, the 10 footer can catch a bit bigger fish nearing 40 pounds! Not bad for the value!

Ugly Stik has been my choice since I first held onto a rod. I have Ugly Stik"s from 4'6"- 10' and the new 7 footer will fit in where the 10 footer would be too much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by J.H. Good rod, OK reel
This is a pretty decent starter for people getting into saltwater fishing (or back into it, like I am). Of course, the Ugly Stik rod is pretty much indestructible. I've actually used sinkers that are heavier than the max. 3oz that are supposed to be used with this, no problems. The rod casts decent, and I've been able to haul in a few stripers with it, without issues. The reel is a pretty cheap model, and works ok. I haven't had any issues with tangles on it, but it's only 2 bearing, so the retrieve is not as smooth and quiet as it would be with a better reel. It's one of those types of reels that you expect to use for a season or two and replace anyway. I'd give it 5 stars if the reel was better.
