Rated 4 out of 5 by Mad Uncle Andy Good enough for its intended purpose
For the money, very nice. Bought it as a starter for a first year boy scout who will probably abuse the heck out of it. I expect he'll get more than my money's worth of use out of it. A larger, transparent baseplate would be nicer, as would a better hinge, but you can expect to pay over double for the next step up.

All in all this compass is great, it functions perfect and the dial is clear and easy to read. However one of the features I bought it for is quite a disappointment, the cover. It, in no way, shape or form, will stay closed. I have to tie it with the enclosed lanyard string which is quite tedious when it should simply snap closed.

On mine, the settings, N, S, E, W, don't line up with the sight line. When set to 360 N, S, which should be 180 is 186, 6 degrees off! Unless you are walking around the block that is serious. Besides the 6 degrees and not having any declination adjustment, It seems to work ok. But certainly not worth $20.00.

I bought this because it had a mirror, and the others did not, but it was twice the price. After opening it I discovered the mirror is not quality and the hing is plastic and the clasp is plastic as well, and neither work. I should have save the extra 10 bucks and bought the cheaper one and b ought a descent mirror for 3 bucks.... Hindsight n all...

My son needed a professional compass for his first Boy Scout camping trip. It fulfilled everything that he required.

Cheap, I wouldn't rely on it. I'm only keeping it until I replace it with another, better built. The door doesn't stay closed, I don't trust it.
