disappointed in quality control
I had high hopes for this compass. I have looked for many years for a simple baseplate compass (no mirror, which is not needed by most users) with ergonomic design, adjustable declination and a clinometer. I finally found this one online, and was pretty excited to order it. When it arrived, there was one immediate flaw: the "Read bearing here" indicator text and mark are almost completely obscured by the bezel (rotating dial). The "read bearing here" mark should be one of the most obvious and easy to find features, but it is si,mply a tiny black line; quite difficult to read. In addition, I found the bezel to appear sort of flimsy. Putting my thumbs on either side of it and gently pushing, I can rock it back and forth quite easily. It does not appear to be very sturdy, and I imagine it's lifetime will be somewhat short as he gets knocked around inside of a pocket or backpack. My preferred compass is the Suunto M3, which is built like a tank, is very easy to take bearings with in darkness because of a luminous "read bearing here" triangle, and has everything this one does except the clinometer. If anyone from Silva is reading this review, I highly suggest you get your quality control figured out. Once some minor adjustments are made, this compass could be a real winner. However, I would not recommend the model that I bought to anyone right now. I am a wilderness navigation instructor and very particular about the compasses that I use, so if anyone reading this review was wondering, I do know what I'm talking about. =^)
