Worked great for me.
I just got into fishing 2 years ago and bought 2 Shakespeare, 2 Diawa and this Pflueger reel. All the others had jams, squeaky bearings and malfunctions. This never gave me a speck of trouble. The only reason it failed is because I took it apart to clean/oil (it didn't seem to need it but thought I should after 2 years) and I could not get it back going again. I think I lost a spring. So am buying another.

Nice for the price & purpose
This concept is great for someone who has used closed face reels and would like an introduction to open face fishing. I purchased this reel as yet another piece of tackle for my fiance to learn with. With the ease of a closed face reel that hangs under a rod the "trigger" provides a natural way to learn the release of the lure when casting. It is a simple step to use an open face reel next.
After a few casts we realized the the line was binding up on the spool. This sort of thing can happen with closed face reels if there is too much line on the spool. I merely stripped off some line and the reel has been flawless since.
Closed face reels do not tend to cast as far as open face, however, it is easier to learn casting accuracy with them. Accuracy is more important than distance!
There are enough ball bearings for a strong "drive-train"and a smooth retrieve.
The drag is easy to adjust and holds the setting applied.
The cover is plastic with a metal "skin" which makes it durable. In certain situations combining plastic and metal is better construction than either alone.
We expect the reel to perform well and last years.
All things considered, it is a nice reel for the price.
She just drops the reel in a backpack without the worry of line becoming tangled.
She uses it with her 5 1/2 foot (med. action) pack rod which the reel balances on nicely.
She loves it!
I am a little envious that she gets to claim this reel for herself.

An unfortunate purchase.
Upon setting the reel up it became tangled and clogged. I didn't even get a chance to use it. It was a disappointment, I thought I could get a decent reel for around this price... Turns out I could, it just wasn't this one.

i would buy this product again and again
This reel is the best reel i have ever owned. It took a little figuring out at first but it has a smooth cast like no other reel i have ever used.

What a drag?
I purchased one of these 1810's as a father's day gift. The "adjustable" drag would not tighten up enough to land a small 2 lb. catfish. The fish was able to pull line no matter what you did. It was very disappointing. The over all look and feel of the reel was great. But, I guess looks don't catch fish. In addition, I returned the reel back to Dick's for an exchange but the next on we pulled off the shelf was no better.

Ehh!!
I have purchased this reel for fishing local Il pond's and small lakes, 4lb. test, in use with a Shakespare 5ft.Ugly Stick ultralight rod, love the rod, the reel, ehhh, but I really like it, so I'll be patient, like the trigger feel, but having problem, so... I'm going to have the boy's look at it, re-spool correct type line, I'll see.
