Rated 3 out of 5 by Great rod but junky reel! This rod is really nice unfortunately the reel is absolute junk. The rod is very strong and has surprising backbone. The reel's drag wont hold it's setting and has to be positioned tightly thus negating the purpose of having one. I replaced this reel with a Zebco 11 and now my Daughter has a nice beginner set up. I give the rod 5 stars and the reel 1 star. April 17, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by great rod, not so good reel I was looking for an ugly stick that was small enough for my 3 year daughter daughter to graduate from those cheap cartoon character rods. I like the size and quality of the rod for a young child. I bought this with the intention of switching the reel since the reel that comes with it is really cheap. I would only recommend this if you don't mind spending $15 to replace the reel. May 26, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Bad product Took 4 year old fishing, and real broke before the first cast. Don't buy April 23, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by The reel was not working the first time she used it We got this pole as a gift for our granddaughter who lives in puyallup Washington for her birthday. We went fishing for her birthday on Easter and the reel was broken from the start very frustrated. I hope they are able to return it to a Dicks in Washington. I couldn't find the receipt and I purchased it in Meridian April 2, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great rod...Reel is Junk! I am very happy with the Ugly Stik Jr. Rod, it is very durable and great for kids. The reel was trash on our first outing, it has plastic gears that slip and prevent smooth casting. I had to replace it and now have a very nice combo. April 14, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Reel is terrible Like other's, I found the reel to be less than acceptable. Spent more time trying to fix the reel than fishing. Eventually the whole thing became useless after about 5 outings. Good rod though, but I'd stay away from this one. April 20, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Would not recommend I bought 2 of these and the reels were completely useless - both of them. Cast out once and could never reel back in again. 2 very disappointed birthday girls. April 13, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Perfect for it's target group. This is a great little combo. The best deal I found yet for kids looking to step up from those very cheesy and annoying Barbie poles. I have been out with the kids several times now and not one complaint. I gave it a try myself and found it easy to use and predictable. August 1, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Stay Away Bought this for my 5 year old for a fishing derby - the reel broke within the first hour of using it! (I see that it happened to someone else as well.) I would have expected more from the Shakespeare brand, very disappointed. I have nephews who have Mickey Mouse combos that have lasted years without any problem. Too late to return as well. Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Rod not so great reel Bought this for my 6 YO daughter, the Rod is great. The reel lasted about 3 hours at most. Replaced the reel with a Zebco 22 Ladies.... And Cajun line, since no one makes pink line red would have to do. Very impressed with this setup. Easy to cast, maintain and maybe more importantly hard to break. She has caught a lot of sunfish, panfish and the likes with this combo. September 29, 2013
