Rated 5 out of 5 by I couldn't be happier with this purchase. After several decades of not holding a bait casting rod and reel in my hands, I decided to get back up to speed by purchasing an economical combo and heading for the lake. After much research I settled on the Lew's Carbon Blue Speed Stick combo and ordered it on line (none of the local stores had it). When it arrived, I was impressed by its great appearance and feel. When I got my chance to try it out, I gritted my teeth in anticipation of a couple of hours picking through birdsnests. Didn't happen. Everything worked beautifully right from the beginning and there was not one backlash all day. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. One comment for those wanting a slower retrieve -- the reel has a 7.1:1 gear ratio rather than the 6.4:1 ratio advertised. September 24, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Lew's Carbon blue bait caster combo I decided to take the plunge into bait casters again. I have tried others in the past and got fed up with all the backlashes. I bought this combo to give them another shot and didn't want to spend a bunch and get frustrated again. I spoiled it up with 20lb braid and once I got it dialed in I was getting decent casts with ease. The next day I took it to the water, first cast out caught a 3lb large mouth. The reel is smooth and once you get the hang of it cast really well. The only complaints are on the rod. It says it is a medium heavy fast rod but using spinners and swim baits it feels more like a medium. For the price of the combo and quality of reel it's a good starting point. August 28, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great durable combo for price I love lews products, I have many of their higher end baitcaster pieces of equipment and I love their quality so if anything I should have a biased opinion but hear me out as to why I only gave 4 stars: 1. The rod specs say the rod is a med/heavy 6"10 with faster taper. I have 5 other med/heavy rods 2 of which are lews products and this blue carbon does not feel like a med/heavy. It feels more like a medium which is a little disappointing. 2. The spool button is not nearly as smooth as you would want it to be. It almost feels like its just straigh plastic on plastic, and even with lubricant, grease and oil it still is a little sticky. Not a huge deal since all you have to do is push a little more firmly but regardless it should be smooth as can be OOB. All were like this too, as many up as possible were tested. Yet again not huge demerits against the combo but that halted me from giving 5 stars. I still love using it, it has handled plenty of 3-4lb toads and with confidence too. Worth the price, still good quality still reliable. 4star worthy. August 6, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by reel is good rod terrible do not waste your time or money on this combo the rod sucks. it broke on me when it was two weeks old. I did not mistreat the rod and it broke when I set the hook on a fish. the reel is a good reel but not woth it to buy the combo July 17, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best baitcaster I've ever owned I was looking for a new baitcaster under $100. This rod and reel is smooth looks excellent and casts far. The drag is easy to use and the whole reel is very compact. I highly recommend this rod and reel to anyone that is on a budget. July 8, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Combo Great Price I bought this reel for large mouth fishing. Took me a couple times out to figure out how to use a bait cast but I think this is about the best starter combo I could've gotten. Caught a nice 6 pounder out of my kayak the second day and the combo handled it well. Nice drag system and good backbone. June 18, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome combo! Haven't fished in years. Got this combo, set it up, and no problems with backlash. Buying another now. March 30, 2016
Rated 2 out of 5 by description is wrong Was very excited to get this combo for cranking, got it home and spooled it up and while tying on a lure noticed the base of the handle says 7.1.... the description says it's supposed to be a 6.4 speed reel! I have an Abu pro max combo which is 7.1 I wouldn't have gotten this if I would have known the actual speed. Other than that small niggle the the blank feels excellent and reel feels sturdy. Can't wait to try it out. December 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love this combo! At 54 y/o this is the first baitcaster I have ever owned. It took me about a week to "get it" and I wanted to put all my coffee grinders(re: spinning reels) on craigslist and go all baitcaster. Even though this is basically a starter kit, the quality and feel is outstanding. Now after 2 weeks of practice I can throw this further then my spinning set ups with no backlash. So if you're thinking about taking the plunge into baitcasting, get this combo. Watch a few youtube vids on how to set up and cast and you'll be on your way. Indeed its all about the set up and how to adjust for different lure weights. Also the overhead release is a bit earlier then a spin set up. The only time I get a backlash now is if I forget to adjust for a new weight or throwing against a hard wind. (don't do that!) Even though I'm sure this combo will be in my arsenal for years to come. I can not wait to get a more high end reel like a Lews BB1 paired with a high quality 7' rod. I should be able to chuck that thing a mile. I am now a Lews fan and a born again baitcaster! Get some! PS. the combo also comes with a coupon for a free T shirt, try and beat that! October 24, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by just awesome!!! awesome baitcast combo. great for beginners who do not want to spend a lot on their first baitcast combo, but also great for experience anglers because this thing is very, very smooth for it's price level. this combo has made me a huge fan of lew's. i keep mine spooled with 15lb berkley big game and i use it for largemouth and spotted bass as a flipping rod, frog rod, worm/jig rod, and any swimbait w/ a single hook because this thing has a lot of backbone. I even take this inshore and have caught reds, trout, and flounder, using it as a float rod or with a small jighead w/ a berkley gulp or small swimbait on it, just have to make sure you rinse it off good when you get out of the salt water or the guides will rust.
