It takes the right gear to reel in your trophy catch. Your saltwater fishing equipment should be corrosion-resistant and ultra-sturdy to battle with the sea’s largest fish.
Graphite and fiberglass saltwater fishing rods offer superb strength for handling large game fish. Fiberglass is a great material for new anglers. This material produces a rod that requires little maintenance. It’s solid fighting power and average weight makes it ideal for saltwater fishing.
Graphite rods are lightweight, sensitive and strong. This rod material performs optimally in a variety of fishing conditions—including saltwater.
Baitcasting and conventional saltwater fishing reels are ideal for fighting bigger, stronger fish over an extended period of time. These reels use the weight of your bait or lure as it pulls the line and turns the spool. Saltwater reels can feature stronger, heavy-duty bodies to keep gears aligned under heavy loads and adjustable drag settings and braking systems.
Some anglers prefer to use a rod and reel ccombo when fishing. In saltwater, a large baitcasting reel and long rod is preferred when distance is a factor. Baitcasting reels often come in a one-piece design to minimize the corrosive effects of saltwater. Anglers looking to cast several hundred times in a fishing trip might choose a conventional combo, especially when fishing larger game.
Keep in mind these factors when stocking up for your saltwater fishing expedition:
- Saltwater trolling motors are built with highly durably marine alloys to resistant rust and saltwater corrosion. Outboard motors are heavier yet easier to shift. The motor’s heavier weight creates more powerful thrust. These motors are great for covering large area over open water.
- A variety of crabbing traps and cages are available, each specialized to allow crabs to enter the mechanism without getting out. Collapsible designs make your trap easy to set-up, take-down and store.
- Saltwater hooks are often bigger and heavier than a freshwater hook. They’re designed with corrosion-resistant materials for added durability. Select from bait hooks, circle hooks and much more.
