Paddle length is the most important factor when selecting a kayak paddle,
and the paddler's height is the main determinant of paddle length.

  • With the paddle standing by your side, reach with your hand over the top of the paddle blade.
  • If you can just curl your finger tips over the blade, the paddle is the right size for you.

Wider Kayaks typically require a longer kayak paddle than narrrow kayaks.

Choose the paddle length that allows you to extend the blades beyond the sides of the kayak and submerge them fully into the water.

Personal preference and the distance you will be paddling helps determine the right paddle weight.

When paddling long distances(3-4 miles) or several hours at a time, consider a fiberglass shaft paddle as it is lighter and reduces fatigue.

Paddle length is determined by placing the paddle under your armpit while placed
on the ground. If the paddle fits snugly, the paddle is the right size for you.

  • For paddlers in the stern(rear) of the boat, a longer paddle may be desired for improved steering/handling of the boat.
  • Paddlers in the bow (front) of the boat may prefer a shorter paddle for quick, short strokes in the water.
