    Air Rifles & Guns

Air guns come in a range of styles and can be classified as either BB guns or pellet air rifles and pistols. Air guns are designed to shoot BBs, pellets or some models even shoot both using air-powered propulsion such as CO2 or a pump.

DICK'S Sporting Goods carries a wide assortment of bb guns and accessories from brand names like Gamo®, Crosman, Daisy and Ruger. Air guns fire either BBs or pellets, depending on the specific make and model. The rifles come in either .22 or .177 caliber.

DICK'S selection of air gun accessories include targets and bb ammo for your air gun. If you need to practice, multiple targets are in stock. DICK'S in-Store CO2 refill service allows your gun to keep working at maximum power and range.

Ammo pouches help you carry your pellets or BBs on an excursion without dropping or losing them, and scopes help you line up your target from a greater distance.

Air guns either use a cocking system or a CO2 cartridge to propel ammunition. The cocking system allows for one round to be fired between cocks, while the CO2 cartridge allows you to fire repeatedly. However, the gun stops working once the CO2 runs out, whereas the cocking system is self-sustaining. CO2 models typically have more power and shoot for longer distances.

Targets come in either paper disposables or metal reusable varieties. The paper targets have pictures of various animals for you to shoot at repeatedly with any kind of ammunition before throwing them away. The metal targets fall down when hit, requiring you to pull them back up with a string. They last longer, but are only intended for lead pellets.

Hunting pellets create a mushrooming effect when they hit their targets, making them damaging or lethal to small game. Wadcutter pellets are designed specifically for practice with paper targets.

When hunting with an air rifle, look for a .22 caliber rifle. Hunting is more about precision and accuracy; look for a fast shot, not a powerful one. Either CO2 or a cocking system is appropriate. Strongly consider adding a scope on a hunting rifle to increase your accuracy and vision when lining up your shot. Competitions generally have standard requirements for entry.

The largest and most popular competitions require .177 caliber air guns. Typically, there are entrants from both types of propulsion systems.

Pest control is more about power than hunting. Most pests are less skittish than game, making accuracy less important. To ensure you quickly and humanely exterminate pests, stick with a high-powered .177 caliber air gun.

Target practice is the most flexible of all the categories. If using targets to practice for hunting or competitions, practice with the same type of air gun used in the real situation. Use this time to properly adjust your scope or sights for when it matters most.
