What Is A Crankbait?

Crankbaits are a type of fishing lure typically designed to mimic the appearance and movements of small baitfish as well as insects fish commonly feed on. The defining feature of a crankbait is its ability to dive down through the water, which is made possible by the plastic "lip" you'll find on the majority of crankbait lures. The size and shape of this lip — along with overall length and weight — determines how deep the crankbait can dive. There are also lipless crankbaits ideal for use in shallow water.

These lures are called crankbaits because their diving action and general movement through the water are activated when you reel in — or "crank" — your line. In general, there are three main types of crankbaits: shallow divers, medium divers and deep divers.

  • Shallow-diving crankbaits, which include the popular square bill crankbaits, typically dive from 1–5 feet. They are ideal for use in shallow weed cover, especially in the spring when large fish move into shallow water to spawn.
  • Medium-diving crankbaits can usually reach depths up to 12 feet, allowing anglers to attract bites from fish they otherwise couldn't reach.
  • Deep-diving crankbaits will have the longest bills, enabling them to reach depths up to 30 feet. Try these crankbaits during the hot summer months when fish retreat to deeper water.

When it comes to choosing the best fishing line for use with a crankbait, you'll want to go with monofilament or fluorocarbon — mono is great for shallow-diving crankbaits while the sinking properties of fluorocarbon make it ideal for deeper dives.
